Woodland Place Senior Living review
It was the worst experience I've ever had with living conditions. When I moved in to the apartment I was told Housekeeping would come and vacuum 1 a week, clean the bathroom and if there was any "heavy" clean ing that we needed they would help when they came. I lived there from [dates removed] and I never saw Housekeeping the entire time, even when my washing machine flooded the apartment twice. By the time I moved out I had black mold coming up from under my carpet. Friendliness of Staff- I rarely, if ever, saw any staff except for the people from the kitchen who delivered our meals, hopefully 3 times a days. Approximately, 10% of the time the dietary staff forgot we were to be fed in the apartments, ran out of food or if they were new, No one told them they had two residents in the apartments out back and they took any extra food home with them. My daughter lives in town so she would make sure we had dinner or go pick up something for us. Also, the 2 of us, for some reason were not allowed to go into the main part of the facility per the administrator ,[name removed]. That is where meals were served, any kind of community meetings were held, monthly birthday parties for all residents, basically the hub of the facility. Also, it's where mail and packages were left even though we had freestanding mailboxes near our apartments, the office would not allow the post office to use those. It might be 3-4 days before someone decides to bring the mail down to us, if ever. My Social Security check was stopped once because I didn't respond within the time frame they had set, because I didn't receive the notification. I went up and insisted they look for it after the SS office told me why my check wasn't deposited. They found it in a huge stack of mail that had been collecting in the administrators office for who knows how long. Another time the new administrator held my packages and was actually picking them up off of my doorstep before I could get to the door, and taking them to the main building and locking them away in her office, because my rent was late. Quality of Care- there was no care. I was told I was Independent Care so not to call them for anything. I asked several times for the Lifeline button I had been promised and was finally told I would not be getting one because I was Independent. My emergency light in the bathroom was not even hooked in to their system.Once I fell and I was hurt badly. I could not get up. I called upstairs hoping someone would come and help but they said you need to call 911. I asked if they would at least come unlock my door and they refused. I had to call my daughter ,who had a key, to come let the paramedics in. I had 4 fractured ribs and 2 ruptured disc's in my neck. Meals- were handed to us or set at our door if they remembered. Activities- they didn't have an Activities director for the first year I was there then they hired a young girl and after a few weeks they had her working as a Medtech and the Maintenance Person. (0) Value for Cost- When I had been there 9 months they had a $[removed]/mth rate increase with 30 days notice. The place really started going down. They would go months without mowing the lawn o r trimming the shrubs. We had major septic problems in our apartments. Mine would usually flush if I was REALLY careful. The lady next door was not so lucky. She had started using her bedside commode and taking the solid waste to the woods and disposing of it. This went on for months. The maintenance guys would work on the toilet and if they didn't get finished they would say don't use it until I come back in the morning. He told both of us that! 6 of us left in [date removed] and moved into [community removed] for almost $[removed]/mth less at Assisted Living level. It's a different world here. We still have problems but nothing like that [profanity removed]. I understand it's still being managed by [name removed]. All [name removed] cares about is keeping warm bodies in beds. You better keep an eye on any of the facilities under his umbrella. He's a slum lord and he puts his women out front to do all of his dirty work while he stays in the shadows. They will hire anybody, also. No matter what their background.

Tour experience
I toured with Woodland Place and the facility itself was older and it wasn't as cheerful of a physical space. The staff was very friendly however during the experience.

This facility was good. Housekeeping of the rooms could improve. The food is ok, but they don't seem to work with restricted/special diets (for blood pressure, diabetes, ect). The staff was lovely. Communication with the family is good. I would recommend them to family and friends.

A good facility
Woodland community is pretty reasonably priced, they offer decent size rooms for their residents. The staff is good. The residents can go on day trips for activities. We would recommend this facility to a family or friend.

Poor place
I don't want to even give this place one star- For the amount of money they charge it should have been in tip top shape. There was filth under the bed, pieces of trash in the bureau drawers, and a pile of dirt in the same spot a week later. Their method of dispensing food to each resident is haphazard - and unevenly distributed per plate. My loved one said that the Med-Tech was like a barking dog named Hitler! Don't put your loved one in this hole!

Older Establishment
The Windsor House was an older establishment. They said they were working on repairing, but it looked pretty run down and did not look very appealing for a place to have our loved one stay. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable when answering our questions. We really wanted something more uplifting and brighter for our loved one.

Close Enough To VIsit
We really like this community and Dad has been enjoying bingo here with help and good care from the nice staff. They keep the community clean and well maintained. My dad does like his meals here. Since Dad lives close, we get to visit him often. The staff are responsive to anything, we had a minor problem and after addressing it they resolved the problem.

Excellent Food
Our experience with Windsor House so far has been a good one. The place is very clean and well-kept it looks great. The Staff has been kind and helpful to my mother. She has partaken in some new activities and she really enjoys the food she said "it is delicious". Everything has been good and the people are nice here. It is a good community that I would recommend.

Dirty
My Dad has been in Windsor House about year and half, started off well and has gone down hill especially the last few months. Today we moved his bed and found actually feces on wall and under bed. I called for the director Andy to see the filth for himself, he didn't have much to say. I am completely heart broken for my father. I would not recommend this place at all!!

Smaller, More Intimate Community
I think they could improve a little on cleanliness. The floors are kind of sticky and there's kind of a smell. Otherwise it's a pretty good place. Mom understand that she has to be somewhere where people can take care of her. This one is closest to me. The next one would be 20, 30 minutes away. I see them play games and they watch tv and have live music and that sort of thing. I like it because it's smaller and more inimate. My mom has a room closer to the dining room and the rooms are nice and big.

We visited and were very favorably impressed. The facility was very clean, no odors of any kind, everyone was friendly and welcoming. The facility was warm, cozy, comfortable and inviting, as was director. We were very impressed this facility is individually owned, therefore, not guided/directed by a large organization.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the South Carolina regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about South Carolina regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Woodland Place Senior Living 1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
