Sun City West Assisted Living review
The main comment I have is that there has been a lot of turnover in staff in the time that my mom has been there, including executive director, head of nursing, and many of the caregivers. This is problematic for a number of reason and has a negative impact on the experience my mom is having.

Fine for Assisted Living, but not for Memory Care.
When we originally toured the facility, the staff were friendly, the residents were smiling and appeared well cared for. After touring 3 other places we decided Sun City West was our best option, even knowing that it was a private facility that Medicare wouldn’t pay for. Even being aware that our father’s Alzheimer’s would progress and he would eventually need memory care, we still felt this was the best of all options. Dad made friends with several residents quickly, one woman was from Russia and she led a group of people who liked to walk. Dad walked every day for years so he fit right in.
Within 2 months there were staff changes, and then dad had a stroke. This quickly propelled him to the next stage of his illness and he needed memory care. Their memory care are was closed off and very small. They did not have any activities for them to do besides watch television in the common area. They were always short-staffed. Most care givers were friendly and helpful, but we could see and the stress they were under. Dad did not do well there. He got Covid as many other residents did, it couldn’t be helped. But he also got infections because he was not being cleaned properly. We live an hour away and we would drive over several times a week to clean his room and bathe him. When we could see the situation was not improving, we started looking for another care home.

I would say that Sun City West assisted living center offers their residents a lot to do if residents choose to participate. They have a nice outdoor space to get fresh air and are very accommodating when family visits or if we have a small party for my loved one.
It always is neat and clean and never has funky smells. If I had a complaint, it would be the high staff turnover, but I'm afraid that is the nature of the industry.

Our Experience
My aunt is currently a resident at this facility. Sun City West Assisted Living and Memory Care is great. The staff is helpful and friendly. My aunt is very happy and everyone is kind. They even take her out to play pool on Tuesdays.

Challenging
Because of poor management -- nobody knows what anyone else on staff is doing, there is very little communication to me and things that need to be fixed go undone for weeks. I would say the nursing care is excellent but it's not well run. I chose it because they have a lot of activities that the residents seem to enjoy.

The staff (as in the workers) are great. The management is horrible. Communication is horrible. I can't figure out how a facility that is this poorly run can stay in business. They certainly have no problem lying to you about what they have done or will do. Classic case of over-promise under-deliver.

Great experience!

The housekeeping and cooking are great. The caregivers are also great. There are enough activities to keep me from being alone and help me with making new friends. Everyone in the community is kind. There are some services that caregivers are supposed to give that don’t go out. I don’t like the service that the dining room gives. I’m hoping they can change it to be more effective and have servers be courteous to the residents.
