The Dominicans no longer run the Village
I recently ended a stay of 2 1/2 hears at the Village. This review only covers Independent Living. It is pleasant and quiet, with the population skewered towards women in their 80s and late 70s. The meals were surprisingly good until they 6 months ago they changed to an inferior service to cut costs You should know that Dominican Village is no longer run by the kindly Dominican nuns. They were known for gentle treatment of residents when their money ran out. They were able to let many of these stay on. Others were placed in a nice residences that accepted Medicaid. Despite a hefty 5% rent increase 2 years ago and a lesser one last year, they were losing money. A year ago the sisters sold the residence and gave up control. The new CEO is stern. In my case he gave me only one relocation that did not suit me, but I had to take it or be out the next day. In the haste to vacate, I had to leave behind all furniture and many other items of value. I would worry about its financial stability.

Dominican Village Tour
I toured with Dominican Village and loved everything about it. Religiously affiliated but was not overly oppressive as such. (I went to Catholic school!) Unfortunately, they could not meet my brother's needs at the time, so we were unable to go with this facility. All of the people that I met who conducted the tours were most pleasant, eager to answer questions and gave freely of their time.

You get what you pay for
My loved one lived in both the Independent and Assisted living here. The grounds are beautiful and larger than any other facility. Independent side was “ok”. The facility is somewhat outdated , the room always a slight “ funky “ smell to it . They recently updated with carpet and paint, but the hallways are still poorly lit . ( lipstick on a pig ) Assisted living side of facility is more like a nursing home. If your loved one still has their faculties, this might might be a cost effective choice . I would not recommend if your loved one needs help with dining , bathroom , bathing or getting involved with social activities. They always seemed “short- staffed” and I witnessed a huge turnover of staff in a 2 year time period. I also observed the staff make mistakes with my mom’s medications on more than one occasion. The staff seems to be happiest with low maintenance residents, and is not willing to go the extra mile to get the residents involved in activities. They seem to prefer the residents sit in front of a TV rather than participate in activities. The assisted living apartments rely on window units for air-conditioning , the windows themselves are ancient and difficult to open-very outdated! Smells like a nursing home- The rooms have connecting drop ceilings, so you know when the Person next door needed a diaper change- This was an obvious problem as they have installed a new ventilation system that never seem to be turned on. I definitely would avoid if your loved ones suffers from Alzheimer’s/dementia, in my opinion the staff is not trained to deal with residents that need extra care, and lack the skills needed to redirect a confused Alzheimer’s patient. Their suggestion was “ more medication “ . Many residents had private aides , that should have been a red flag to me , why would anyone pay extra for an outside aide to come into an “assisted “ living facility? - isn’t The purpose of putting someone in this type of a facility to have their needs met by the the staff ?

there are bedbugs now...
Was such a lovely place. My Dad got very good care. Such a shame about the bedbugs, and some staff have gone. The ones there are such nice people but there seems to be a lot of turnover. It smells more like a nursing home than it used to.

My brother and I visited with Mom and really liked Dominican Village. There was lots of activity, families visiting spoke highly of the facility and staff and each person had their own private "studio" room. The all-inclusive care and ability to provide care through hospice was also a plus. For financial reasons we selected another facility for now, however, should mom's care needs expand, we will definitely go back to the Dominican Village.

Lovely facility. Patient and very informative tour guide. The Dominican Village has so many well thought out programs, amenities and security features that make it seem to be a very appealing option for a new home and life style for my parents. This is the first place we have toured so we are far away from their final decision yet.

A tour for care and comfort
We could this community for my mom. The staff was nice, but they do not allow smoking only in a courtyard. We liked the beautiful community that was clean and beautiful. The rooms are bright and very nice for the residents to have a good environment. The menu was appealing and the list of activities would have been offered. We would recommend that families tour this community for the care of a loved one with a good value.

Beautiful and clean facility. Curtious staff, willing to help you with your needs. Rooms are large enough to be comfortable . Large dining room , has elevators , sitting areas outside of apartment on the same floor. Has a well stock library a place to buy junk food and a movie theater. It is unfortunate that they do not take people with Alzheimers . That is the only draw back. That is why I gave only 4 stars.

My Comfort Zone
A warm welcoming atmosphere. People are friendly as is the staff. How they can remember the name of someone they met in the morning and call them by name at dinner that evening or at breakfast the next morning is truly a wonderful experience. It makes you feel special.A little more planned activities in the evening after dinner would help in not making the evening seem so long.

Couldn't be happier!
My father recently moved from his own home in upstate New York. He had lived alone for over a decade, and liked the country, but all we really wanted him closer as he aged. Dominican Village has proven to be Perfect! Though he has no physical or mental limitations now, DV is equipped to increase care as he needs it. The staff and residents have all, without a single exception, been welcoming and warm! His apartment is beautiful, he loves the food, and there are more activities to choose from than he ever believed. We are all, but most importantly my Dad is, thrilled to have him in such a wonderful environment! I would recommend Dominican Village to any person who wants a great living environment, without the worry of cooking and hiring a lawn crew. :)

My Mom Is So Happy, Here!
My mom, who is 92, just became a resident at the Dominican Village in April. She had been residing at another place for 3 years. She is happier at Domincan Village; she says they are very friendly there and the staff is very caring and helpful to her. In the first two weeks, she used the emergency alert system that they have in place and was very pleased and impressed with the help that she received. Her apartment is a one bedroom and she is impressed with the large size and the layout. Since she is vision impaired, she needs a place that she can get around easily, once she learns the place. After only a few weeks there, she was able to find her way to the dining room, the Activities room, the Cafe, and Hair Salon by herself. She was a great cook, herself, before she had to give it up b/c of her failing eyesight. She tells me that the food served at Domincan Village is very good and plentiful. If she wants two desserts, she can have them! All in all, the Domican Village is an excellent place to live!

Loving the Village
My mother in law moved to Dominican Village 2 weeks ago. She personally considers herself a loaner and was unsure how she would adjust to living in an apartment type situation especially after being a homeowner for the last 60 years. SHE LOVES IT!!! Her exact words to me were "I didn't think I would like it as much as I do" that was on day 3. She is now there for almost 2 weeks and she is getting into the groove of things. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, the food is very good and healthy and she is enjoying the various activities they have throughout the day. My MIL thinks it's funny how everyone gossips and complains about things. Especially the washing machines on each floor. One is for dark colors the other for lights and if you make a mistake everyone finds out at meal time. My MIL now has the bounce back in her step and a smile on her face. I have not seen her this happy in years. In my opinion this is independent living at it's best, She is given 2 meals a day 6 days a week, they have shopping trips daily, Doctors on site weekly if she needs to make an appointment, light housekeeping, she is able to take care of her own laundry and come and go as she pleases. She is also given one of the life alert type necklaces to wear in case of an emergency. All in all we and she is VERY HAPPY!

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the New York regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about New York regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Dominican Village 3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
