Looking for a beachside retirement town for you or a loved one? Naples, Florida, is the perfect place for seniors. It boasts more than 250 days of sunshine a year, and the area is known for its high-end living and upscale shopping.
Choosing a nursing home can be daunting, partly because the term nursing home means different things to different people. The term is often used broadly to refer to senior living. However, it actually refers to skilled nursing facilities that provide seniors with 24/7 supervision and licensed health care.
These communities specialize in caring for individuals who cannot live on their own. But more often than not, people are looking for options that provide more independence, such as assisted living or memory care. These communities help seniors be as independent as possible while supporting them with on-site personal or health care. A Place for Mom partners with 17 assisted living and memory care facilities within a 10-mile radius of downtown Naples. Still, 94% of these communities offer on-site nursing services.
In this guide, you’ll receive a comprehensive overview of our partner facilities in Naples, cost and payment options, applicable laws and regulations, senior transportation options, nearby hospitals, senior activities, and more.

We developed a proprietary recommendation system that orders Naples community options based on factors we know are important to seniors and their families:
We collect proprietary data from our network of 14,000+ senior living communities in the U.S., with regular refreshes of data and information
We have 387,000+ reviews from senior living residents and family members that provide first-hand accounts about senior living communities
The median monthly cost of a private room in a nursing home is $14,905 in Naples or $9,277 for a shared room.[02] This is much higher than the cost of assisted living or memory care. According to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data, the average total cost of a Naples assisted living facility is $4,081, and the average actual cost of a Naples memory care facility is $4,941.[01] These numbers include service fees and add-ons.
The cost of each facility reflects how much care residents will have access to. For instance, skilled nursing facilities provide 24/7 medical care and assistance to seniors who have serious health conditions or disabilities. Assisted living facilities, on the other hand, offer assistance with daily living activities in a residential setting. They are best for seniors who need help with daily tasks but don’t require acute medical care. Similarly, memory care communities support residents with dementia, offering a secure environment and specialized programming to support memory function.
Looking for a skilled nursing, assisted living, or memory care facility for you or a loved one? You may be concerned about the cost.
Seniors and families often use a variety of income streams when paying for a senior living facility. Funding options include private income streams, VA benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare. Each method has its benefits and limitations. In this section, you’ll learn more about how these funding options can cover senior living expenses.
Private pay methods refer to personal income streams and savings that can be used to cover senior living expenses. This includes income sources such as Social Security benefits, pensions, and investment returns, as well as any of the following:
Number of veterans who live in Naples, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
About 67% of Naples veterans are 75 or older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
Several resources are available for senior veterans who want to move into a skilled nursing, assisted living, or memory care facility. Veterans can apply for a VA Pension if they’ve been honorably discharged and meet certain eligibility requirements. The other benefit most commonly used to pay for skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care is the Aid and Attendance benefit. Aid and Attendance can be used on expenses that improve a veteran’s quality of life. You can apply online or at one of the regional VA offices in St. Petersburg and Largo, Florida. A full list of benefits can be found on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
We recommend reaching out to a veterans services organization (VSO) for assistance with the benefits application process. VSOs are where you can find veterans services officers, which are vetted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and are considered the best source of information. Naples features three VSOs that can help: the Collier County Veteran Service office, a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post, and a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) location. There are also more individual veterans services officers across Florida.

Medicaid provides eligible individuals with coverage for institutional long-term care, which includes nursing homes. Medicaid will pay for room and board, nursing care, therapy, medications, and medical supplies.[04] To qualify for Medicaid coverage in Florida, an individual must meet certain eligibility criteria, including financial and nonfinancial requirements.
Unfortunately, Medicaid only covers room and board at skilled nursing facilities. Seniors at assisted living or memory care facilities cannot use Medicaid to cover custodial costs. However, medically necessary services are covered.
In Florida, Medicaid is administered through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) program by the Agency for Health Care Administration. SMMC comprises three separate programs: the Long-Term Care program (LTC), the Managed Medical Assistance (MMA) program, and the Dental Program.
To access coverage for services provided in an assisted living or memory care facility, you’ll need to utilize waivers. The Home and Community-Based Services Waiver program covers most health care services. Long-Term Care waivers are designed to delay or prevent institutionalization by covering in-home or community health care. And MMA covers doctor visits, mental health care, and more for Medicaid recipients.
Seniors in Florida can access impartial financial counseling through the Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) program provided by the Department of Elder Affairs and the Area Agency on Aging. The Florida Ombudsman Program is another vital resource for seniors and families who need long-term care support and advocacy.

Medicare offers limited coverage for skilled nursing. To qualify for coverage, seniors must meet the following conditions:
Medicare considers assisted living and memory care to be custodial care, so everyday expenses like room and board aren’t covered. However, Medicaid can be used to cover medical services, supplies, and care.
Seniors are eligible for Medicare if they’re 65 or older and have Social Security Disability benefits. To apply online, visit the Social Security Administration website.
There are several state programs that can help you with financial assistance and counseling. These programs include:
The Social Security Administration is the best resource for general inquiries about Medicare. If you or your loved one have complaints about a long-term care facility, you can reach out to the Florida Ombudsman Program.

Depending on the type of care community, several laws and regulations are applicable to ensure seniors receive adequate care.
For skilled nursing facilities, state regulations are enforced by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, and federal regulations are enforced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Current regulations for nursing homes include:
For more detailed information on skilled nursing, the State Operations Manual for Long-Term Care Facilities lists all guidelines for facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs.
Other forms of long-term care, such as assisted living and memory care, must follow regulations set by the Florida Bureau of Health Facility Regulation. In addition to the standard license, some communities may hold specialty licenses such as limited nursing services, extended congregate care, and limited mental health services.
Communities must undergo an initial inspection before receiving a license and are inspected after that at least every two years. The inspection covers staff-to-patient ratios, staff training, resident care plans, and registered nurse staffing levels. All inspection reports are available online on the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration website.
Some additional regulations for memory care include:
Both assisted living and memory care facilities are required to provide home-like atmospheres with plenty of staff to care for residents’ needs at all times of day.

While there are no COVID-19 ordinances in Naples, individuals and businesses are encouraged to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to protect themselves and others. Some senior living facilities may have specific COVID-19 protocols, so it’s best to contact them for information before visiting.
