Seniors in Henderson sometimes combine personal income sources, like savings accounts and retirement pensions, to cover their monthly independent living costs. Since independent living communities don’t typically provide senior care services, these communities aren’t covered by long-term care insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. However, we provide information on those programs in this section, since they can be used to pay for medically necessary in-home health care services if ever needed.
In the following sections, you’ll find information on private pay methods, veterans benefits, and both Medicaid and Medicare resources for seniors in Henderson.
Seniors typically pool their personal income sources — like savings accounts, pensions, Social Security benefits, and investment returns — to cover independent living costs. It’s important to note that long-term care insurance won’t cover independent living community costs. That’s because these communities are not care facilities, meaning they don’t provide direct care services to their residents.
Many residents of our partner communities utilize the following methods to pay for their ideal independent senior living community:
If you’re a senior veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, you may qualify for a range of benefits that can help cover independent living costs in Henderson. There are many potential benefits, and many veterans are unaware they qualify. You can start by checking the VA’s list of service-connected disabilities and see what applies to you. It’s always a good idea to connect with your local veterans service officer or veterans benefit advocate to see if you qualify or not.
The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is often the most helpful benefit for eligible veterans with disabilities. If eligible, you could receive generous monthly payments that can cover your independent living costs. Even if you think you might not qualify, we recommend contacting a local veteran services organization (VSO) to understand all your potential benefits. The VA benefit application process can be difficult and overwhelming, but VA-vetted VSOs can provide guidance and expertise throughout.
The following resources can help you start the process of applying for your eligible VA benefits:

Nevada Medicaid is the state’s Medicaid program for low-income residents. It doesn’t cover room and board in a private Henderson independent living community, since these are not nursing care facilities. But it will cover in-home health care services if such care is medically necessary and provided by a third-party care agency contracted with Medicaid.
If you grow to need care in your independent living community, Medicaid can provide in-home health care services through their Home and Community Based Services Waiver for the Frail Elderly. This waiver program helps seniors receive care in their chosen place of residence instead of in a long-term care facility. You must be eligible for Nevada Medicaid in order to benefit from this waiver.
Nevada’s Dual Eligible Special Needs Program (or D-SNP) is an option for seniors who are enrolled in both Nevada Medicaid and Medicare. D-SNP coordinates coverage from both programs to help eligible seniors get the most out of their health care benefits.

Henderson stand-alone independent living communities typically have a minimum age requirement of 55 years. Residents are sometimes required to also be considered independent upon admission. Additionally, all rental complexes are required to follow general housing standards under the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Under these laws, seniors with disabilities have a right to accessibility standards in rental communities like independent living facilities. Read on for some examples of some of those accessibility standards.
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), owners of all rental complexes must consent to reasonable accommodations and modifications for their residents with disabilities. Landlords are required to pay for accommodations and certain structural modifications of common areas, while the senior resident should pay for certain structural modifications to their individual unit.[06] Below are some common examples of modifications and accommodations that could fall under the ADA act.
