The front desk was friendly. The administrators [name removed] was not friendly or helpful, refused to sign standard forms for VA to get benefits, refused to answer phone call -emails- and respond or have a face to face meeting so we left. They really don't care if you need anything. Cleaning people were sick a lot and PT would not show up half the time or say not coming so you wait for 30 months and no show for scheduled appts. They give you a taxi list but tell you all transportation is included but that is not true. There is transportation on Mondays 1-3 only. Meals were decent but expensive for dinners. Breakfast was reasonable cost wise. Activities were decent. Value for cost was decent, but [community name removed] is better and more things included such as free rides to appointments in cars like joy ride etc. Would not recommend for a Veteran as not helpful doing paperwork required by VA but an alright facility there are better places for same cost that are nicer and licensed with more to offer!

Highly Recommended
My mother in law was a resident at Walnut Ridge Memory Care (The Arbors). We could not have been happier with the total picture at Walnut Ridge. The staff in The Arbors was excellent in EVERY way! Friendly, diligent, caring, great on communication! We would HIGHLY recommend The Arbors. On a sad note, my mother in law passed away just last week. Her memorial is going to Walnut Ridge The Arbors, that speaks volumes about the facility!

Highly recommend for memory care!
I have heard they are hiring a 2nd nurse so there is one on nights and weekends. That has inhibited a few things when care was required. Not a lot of activities getting them out of the facility. The bus had been broken. Even a bus ride around time would be nice. The staff are wonderful in the memory care unit. The presentation and atmosphere in the building are first class.

What we like the most about the Walnut Ridge community is their apartment, it is great. The staff members who work there are very friendly. It is a little expensive but we want them to be comfortable. Our family really likes the Walnut Ridge community.

Our family experience
We were told all transportation was included in 5 mile radius but there is no medical rides only a Monday at 1 that's it so not all transportation is included and that was a huge misrepresentation for me as i am only sibling in state to help parents. I would recommend just was irritated about the transportation

happy to promote memory care at Walnut Ridge
Walnut Ridge is a beautiful facility with staff that is outstanding, best care we could ask for our Mother. They are very honest about situations and sometimes it isn't what you want to hear but need to know. But always done in a caring/ loving way!! The rom sizes in memory care are very adequate and nicely arranged to feel spacious! Amenities are included in the memory care price! Staff is so upbeat and makes your loved one feel like they are the most important person. We have watched our mother blossom in the time she has been there and we were totally prepared for the opposite to happen!

I am 90% happy with them.
There was some initial confusion with long term care insurance and their levels of care, and memory care, and I understand they are building more. It's clean, and the staff is pretty good. The food is fresh and they have a good variety of food options. They have lots of activities, if you want to do something there is plenty to do. I am 90% happy with them.

Walnut Ridge Seasonal Option
Mom is a 72 year old widow who lived alone in the country 20 minutes outside of Des Moines. She gets lonely especially in the winter when her friends travel south and the snowy roads keep her home. Walnut Ridge offered her a fully furnished apartment for the winter months. It's been a great opportunity for mom to meet new people, get involved in activities, and yet still have her home in the country.

No Room in Memory Care
This place starts out with independent living and then they have assisted living and a waiting list for memory care. The lady over there said they have no opening but she said they've had people before in assisted living who need to move to memory care and they just don't have the space so they sent them to Glen Oaks and they've gotten great feedback about them so that's how I found Glen Oaks which is where I moved my wife. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with Walnut Ridge itself. It wasn't my least favorite but they were just sort of darkly decorated and I wouldn't have wanted to live there, personally.

Not good for more "advanced" memory loss
This was okay... he was jsut asked to leave because he needed more care than they could provide. I don't really think his care needs escalated, he was the same as when he went in but they just said they couldn't take care of him.

Great Wellness Center with Work Out Room and Pool!
They have excellent activities and their wellness center facility is top notch! They have a work out room and a pool and everything. That was a big draw because we used the wellness facility before we even moved here. They have movies every Friday and Saturday. They have a social hour every week and games and good mixer activities so you can get to know the other residents. We like that.

Fitness center and big pool
Everything is really good but it is a little pricey. We had visited several places and Walnut Ridge had the most options available for our loved one. They have a fitness center that is staffed and a big pool where they do water aerobics. The food is good. The landscaping is lovely. They have wonderful interior common areas. The price is around $5,000.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Iowa regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Iowa regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Walnut Ridge 9.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
