Fabulous community!

Great tour very impressed.
I had an opportunity to tour this facility. I was very impressed with the thoroughness of information provided as well as the variety of activities. The therapy onsite looks amazing as well. When we are ready this is the community for my dad.

I don’t often take the time to write about the good things but in this case I wanted to share our great experience. My dad was very lonely after mom passed and was isolated at home. He was resistant to move but after being here less than a month he is enjoying having people to talk to. He loves the food. When I wanted to pick him up to bring him to lunch he wax worried about making it back in time not to miss the activities. He’s smiling and happy again. I am so pleased.

Impressed and relieved.
My mom was living at another senior living community. She was not happy and staying in her apartment. I saw a dramatic difference in less than two weeks of moving in. Everyone knows her name. The other residents welcomed her and invited her to participate. She went on an outing today and had a wonderful time. She now tells me she has a busy schedule with her friends and is exited and happy. She also loved the food. Great job!!!

Grateful!!!
I am incredibly grateful for finding The Village of the Heights! I wanted my mom to have friends, a good happy life and be able to bring her dog. The deal breaker was not having her baby with her. Right away the Executive Director was willing to give it a go. My mom was going to be in memory care and they had not had a resident pet before. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff, activities, and good. We are truly blessed and ready to move in my aunt. So thankful!!!

Very impressed!!
Wow what a difference a community makes. My mom was at a different assisted living and visiting in her apartment. I was afraid of what I would fine when I walked into her apartment at her old community. In less than a week at The Village of the Heights she was going to meals in the dining room, doing activities and going to happy hour. For the first time I can go away on a trip and be confident mom is being taken care of.

Fabulous community!!!
I was looking for a community for my mom but was extremely nervous and worried. My mom needed Memory Care and all this was new to me. The amount of information I received from the Executive Director was amazing. Everyone reassure me but I had no idea how much of an impact and difference this would make in my mom’s life. It literally took her less than a day to acclimate. I could not believe she was living life again. She had friends was busy all day with amazing programming and she was going on outings. My mom had retreated into herself and lost weight and was barely talking. When I asked her your days in how she was her response was “I’m having fun”. She is worried about having nice clothes and she has gained 7 lbs. I cannot say enough to thank The Village if the Heights and all their wonderful staff. Highly recommend!!!

Nice veneer; look deeper
We moved out after 3 months. They say they are dog friendly but many of the staff are deathly afraid of dogs and won't enter a resident's room if there is a dog in there. This includes housekeeping and some med techs. There is no leadership from the top. They are short staffed many times. A small percentage of the staff are great. The rest are terrible and disappear on their shifts or just sit in the break room playing with their phones. They need more space to do activities, more outdoor activities and more effort to make sure residents know about them. Posting a notice in the elevator is not sufficient. Many residents are nearly blind and others have the memory of a housefly. They need hand holding.

Excellent community!
From the second I walked in it felt like home and I could tell my mom would be truly happy. The receptionist greeted me by name with a smile and offered me refreshments. The Executive Director greeted me and sat down to get to know my mom as a person not what she needed help with. I was so impressed as the chef came in and served coffee and homemade lemon bundt cakes which were delicious by the way. Food is really important to mom, and they have a wonderful selection daily. I was please to know they have two nurses at the community and long tenured staff in care, reception and dining. My mom was recovering from an injury and knowing that they have therapy onsite was a relief. Mom is so happy I cannot say enough wonderful things about this community. I would highly recommend.

Only good thing: the food is OK
Complete and utter disappointment. We're leaving after 3 months. We would have left earlier if circumstances would have allowed. Some of the staff are very nice but staffing is short and most seem to be undertrained. We were told that pets are welcome but then learned that many of the staff are afraid of dogs and won't enter the room. This includes med techs and the housekeeper. This makes ensuring my parents get the meds they need almost impossible. The room was cleaned two times in three months and normally no one comes in the room to check on anyone as they are supposed to. Initially we had issues with the thermostat and couldn't control temp in the room. That took an act of congress to fix. I could go on and on but I'll just summarize by saying "one star. Do not recommend."

Review for The Village of the Heights
It is an absolute waste of money.[name removed] with A Place for Mom, was very nice and tried to help. We picked this community, because [name removed] aggressively convinced me that this was the best place for my loved one. She also spoke very poorly about the other two places I was seriously considering- one of them within her same company- [removed]. She also assured me that she would help me with any questions or problems that might arise but she never answered me again after we had signed on the dotted line. She is apparently no longer with the company- not sure why. The whole experience was so disheartening.

Lacks communication with the residents family
Some improvements The Village can make is the level of care that is described and what is promised and carried out is different. For example if our loved one was to get sick and need to get a test done they said it could be arranged with the community and get the test back in the same day. However when we actually experience that situation first hand it did not happen, and in fact the test was never performed. Management was a little lackadaisical.

Relieved to have found a good place for my loved one
Really the only problem has been proper administering of medications, due to the fact that they're short-staffed. Since I've talked with the manager, there haven't been any other mistakes. The foods is good, and my loved one has made friends with the cook. She saves back cookies for him that work with his diet, and she and the other staff generally spoil him. The people there are wonderful, especially the caregivers. They treat their charges like their own family. The receptionist is beyond the best. My loved one really likes the staff a lot. There's another young man who assists the caregivers, and he's very nice, considerate, enthusiastic, and polite. The nurse practitioner comes up every week or so and checks on the residents' medical care. They all seem like really compassionate, caring people over there. The place is really clean, and the staff is dedicated to the residents. The residents themselves are really nice. The Village requires masks, which I think is good to help protect a vulnerable population. My loved one enjoys dominoes, bingo, and exercise classes. It's kind of pricy at The Village, but in-line if not a little less than other places I checked out.

A beautiful facility, friendly and helpful staff, but expensive
The Village community is expensive, however the communication during this time has been great. First impression was excellent, they were so helpful with the entire process. We chose The Village because of it's high end level of care. Everyone is super helpful, it is a beautiful facility with a beautiful view of downtown Houston. The administrative staff was just unbelievably helpful.

Look beyond the facade
A tale of two homes...This is a beautiful facility with good options for food, activities, and social interaction. Beyond the facade is a world of poor management and broken promises of care. I’m mortified that I ever rested well while my Dad was in The Villages at The Heights. Despite paying for upgraded care levels, we moved my Dad to a new home recently with two weeks of dirty laundry, a full urinal that had not been emptied, dirty clothes, diaper rash, a soiled diaper, etc.. He had not been bathed in a week. Many hourly workers were wonderful, but I’m still waiting on a response to my email to facility management in December 2017.

Do not recommend for Memory Care
I would not recommend their Memory Care unit. Generally, a few staff members are good, the rest apathetic and sometimes asleep in the tv room while residents sit there in their chairs. The food sub par. The VPN is not professional. A close family member passed away there as a result of an illness that had gone undiagnosed until it was too late. Had the staff been more attentive to the noticeable decline, there might have been a chance for recovery. My family member deserved better.

I really liked The Village of the Heights. It's a new property but with two years under their belt they are keeping it pristine and kept up. The residents looked happy and well looked after. It's tucked into a neighborhood which is good for evening strolls. If further down the road the resident needs memory care they offer that on site as well. I liked all the activities and different rooms for them to attend functions along with a full hair and nail salon and consigner. They also offer weekly faith based services which was an added plus.

Nice Experience!!
I had recently taken a tour of this community and I have no complaints of how things had went. The property was clean and they had a lot of nice features throughout the building. The dinning room was spacious and they seemed to have a great menu selection for all of the residents. It was just not the right location for my dad in the end decision.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Texas regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Texas regulations for Assisted Living.
