Review for English Meadows Harrisonburg Campus
We have recommended English Meadows to others and will continue to do so when possible. We only have experience with the Memory Care Unit but other residents seemed happy and well cared for. So we can recommend English Meadows highly to other families.

Exceptional Care Facility
Great things - fantastic front-line care givers treated well by management so lower than expected turn-over; relatively new facility well maintained; feels like a hotel; easy and timely access to all Directors (Exec Dir, Wellness Dir, Activities Dir, Chef) for both Residents and family members; dedicated Concierge at the front desk all day and later in the evening to answer questions and connect visitors with Residents and staff; cute Independent Living cottages with lots of facility-provided benefits; completely separate Memory Care wing with dedicated staff. Nothing bad to say about English Meadows Harrisonburg. This is my facility of choice for when I need the support of Long Term Care.

Uncaring of Residents, only want their money
The facility is currently without any hot water because they refused to fix the hot water mixing valve which has been malfunctioning for months. They supposedly got several estimates to get it fixed but only worried about paying for landscaping. There are many times the food is under-cooked, they even served raw chicken once! I started volunteering to help clean because the housekeepers weren't doing their job and then I was offered a job there, which I did for a number of months. I got tired of the mismanagement and having to buy my own cleaning supplies. Twenty20 Management only cares about the residents monthly payments, just don't write a check as they don't accept them. Most of the good staff have already left, there are still some good ones left, especially in Memory Care. Management is friendly to some people and thumb their noses up at others. I have filed several complaints with the state concerning several issues, twice now about the hot water system.

Good family community
Overall was good, people were helpful. Overall clean but not sure how often they clean her room and change her sheets but both were lacking. Activities are good but was told prior to admission that weekly trips to places. She has been to 3 places since admission. Dining is ok.

Excellent care.
The memory care unit has provided excellent care for my brother with a difficult dementia. They have been wonderfully kind and have provided excellent care! When he is very agitated they seem to have the correct calming care.

Horrible management
The caregivers here are wonderful but I can't say so for the management. The way they treat their staff is shameful! The emotionally and physically challenging work they do is unappreciated by management.

Beautiful retirement community.
Beautiful community, tastefully decorated, quiet, friendly atmosphere. Staff is nice. Food could be improved -- bland, Luke warm. Under new management with the usual growing pains.

Great location and tastefully decorated community.
Great in the beginning, but the community changed management companies and although the one site management team had not changed the atmosphere and delivery of magic services had suffered some setbacks. Just doesn’t feel quite the same!

Review for The Phoenix at Harrisonburg
Experience has been, for the most part, good. I still have some things that I need to figure out or speak to someone about, and honestly, I would love it if there were a community much closer. I would definitely recommend it.

Extremely Helpful Friendly Staff & Well-Kept Facility
My mother-in-law has been a resident at the Phoenix at H'burg for over a year & has really enjoyed it & highly recommends. Management is great – always helps to resolve problems. Staff are extremely helpful & very good at what they do. Beautiful clean facility – that is well-kept inside & out. Everything in the facility is easy for her to navigate with her rollator. The maintenance guy is excellent & always quick to hang items on the wall when asked. The chef is always open to meal suggestions & feedback. The Phoenix location is perfect – very close to the hospital. Mother-in-law really enjoys the craft activities & bus trips which have all increased since the Phoenix at H'burg has grown. She also enjoys it when outside groups come for activities – such as musicians & local schools. My husband & I have attended various activities during her stay and have really enjoyed them. She loves the snacks & drinks put out in the bistro area for the residents. Phoenix is best fit for our needs.

Beautiful facility with caring staff
It has been one year since my Mother moved into The Phoenix at Harrisonburg. It was a tough transition moving from her home in another state to an assisted living environment. With the help and care of the staff, my Mother has a beautiful and comfortable apartment. She has made many friends, started a library and runs a book club. She enjoys all of the musicians that perform periodically and enjoys the camaraderie with her friends during meals. The facilities are pristine and are easily accessed by the residents. All staff, from the director to the event coordinator, to all medical staff and assistants have been available for my Mother's needs. In addition, when her children have questions or concerns, we are contacted promptly to hear answers or develop solutions together. The financial coordinator and marketing director have been helpful as well.

Best Place in the Area
After visiting other places in the Augusta and Rockingham County areas, The Phoenix at Harrisonburg was a clear choice. It is new, well-designed, well-decorated, full of natural light, just the right size and a good value compared to others. A few other facilities we really liked require a high six figure “asset pledge” which we cannot afford. At the Phoenix, the fees are monthly, based on individual needs and easy to understand. We also “did the math” and since the fees are all inclusive, it is half the cost of keeping a home or apartment and paying for in home caregivers and domestic help. We love the staff that interacts daily with Mom…they are patient, caring and well-trained. No facility is perfect, but we feel this is the best of its type in the area.

Great experience
Please keep in mind that my mother only lives there for a month and was almost immediately put in Hospice which took over much of her daily care needs. Mom did very few of the activities because of her illness. Nothing is perfect. But they were perfect for us .

Friendly Staff
The staff were always friendly and helpful. The food was not that good. Recently they a hired a new chef, so hopefully the food improves. They do have activities, and the activities director tried her best to get the residents invloved. The value for the money was reasonable. They were always good with keeping me informed with my loved one, and they were pleasant.

A nice community but needs to grow to be able to provide what they offer
The Phoenix is a new community that just opened so right now they do not have enough residents to provide the transportation that is offered. They also do not have a lot of activities right now but hopefully has the continue to grow that will soon change.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Virginia’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Virginia’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored The Phoenix at Harrisonburg 8.3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
