My uncle was there for a year- he passed away there. He was in the memory care building so I can only speak for that building. Almost all patients were more advanced dementia. They take only 12 residents. It was perfect for him. He received a lot of attention, the caregivers were exception

Review for The Palms of Mt. Pleasant
My uncle was there for a year- he passed away there. He was in the memory care building so I can only speak for that building. Almost all patients were more advanced dementia. They take only 12 residents. It was perfect for him. He received a lot of attention, the caregivers were exceptional, it was more like a home environment. He had been in 2 other facilities and this was without a doubt the best. But it is definitely more suited for advanced dementia or those that do better in a quiet environment. Because it was so small, all the residents got a lot of attention, and the staff seemed to really feel called to work with dementia residents- they joked a lot and had great attitudes

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and for trusting us with your uncle’s care. We are truly honored to have been part of his journey and extend our sincere condolences to you and your family. We’re grateful to hear that our Memory Care neighborhood provided the quiet, home-like environment and individualized attention your uncle needed. Caring for residents with advanced dementia is a calling, and your kind words about our caregivers—their compassion, humor, and dedication—mean a great deal to our entire team. Your feedback thoughtfully highlights what makes a smaller Memory Care setting so special: deeper connections, consistent care, and the ability to truly know each resident. Thank you again for sharing your perspective and for allowing us to care for your uncle. He will always be remembered by our team.

Everything sounded perfect for my mother to reside at The Palms except that the main hallways, walls, carpets and trim work were so in need of updating, repair and renovations that it would be a deal breaker for Mom. Beyond that, the staff was personable, helpful and informed and the services sounded like a great match, Indepedent with services. If a close date for that work to be done is available, please let me know. I will still bring my mother in soon to see and tour.

Thank you for your thoughtful and honest review and for considering The Palms for your mother. We truly appreciate you sharing both what resonated with you and where we can improve. We’re glad to hear our team made a positive impression and that our Independent Living with services felt like a strong fit for your mother’s needs. Your feedback regarding the condition of the main hallways and common areas is important to us and has been shared with our leadership team as we continue to evaluate updates and renovations. We would be happy to keep you informed as plans and timelines are finalized. In the meantime, we would welcome the opportunity to host you and your mother for a personal visit so she can experience the community, meet our team, and see if it feels like home despite the areas you noted. Thank you again for your transparency and interest—we look forward to staying connected.

Review for The Palms of Mt. Pleasant
Her medical care was basically zero. She was taken off all of her medications for days for no apparent reason. When I asked what had happened, I was told that the person responsible was out of town and it was miscommunication. She was moved to a different room and when I went to visit, 10 days later, she had no clothes. No walker. No cane. Which she had used prior. I asked to go back in old room to see if her things were in there, they were, including a box of medications. No toilet paper or rod to hang shower curtain in bathroom. There are more complaints but these are the main ones.

Review for The Palms of Mt. Pleasant
The facility was not kept clean, the trash bins in the collections rooms overflowed on the weekends, and the smell was disgusting. The carpet on the 2nd floor hallway was never vacuumed and the construction particles were up and down the hallway. The 1st floor flood several times and smelled there as well. The food was so salty that we didn't try it again after the first time we ate dinner. The front staff is clueless, they act like they have no idea what is going on. Yes you can share my review. I was told the Assisted Living area was worse than the Independent Living.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are very concerned to read about the conditions you described, as cleanliness, safety, and a welcoming environment are fundamental to the experience we strive to provide. What you’ve outlined does not align with our expectations for any area of the community. We also regret that your interaction with our front desk team left you feeling unsupported, as clear communication and helpful guidance are essential. Your comments about dining quality are also taken seriously. Nutrition and enjoyment of meals are an important part of daily life, and we regret that your experience did not meet expectations. This feedback has been escalated to our leadership and operations teams for immediate review and corrective action. We value transparency and accountability, and we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly to better understand the timeline and specifics so we can address these concerns thoroughly. Please reach out to our Executive Director directly at (843)884-6949 so we can follow up personally.

The Best Care of my Mom, caring nursing staff day or night.
The nursing is very spot on. They have a very caring staff who whenever I wanted to know how my Mom was, they would call me and tell me her every daily routine and care. Thank you all for helping me when I needed you. A place for Mom is excellent.

My mother is not happy with the meals. Over all they are not very attentive here. Maintenance does seem to be pretty responsive. She does like bingo and her apartment is nice enough except there's no hot water in the kitchen. The cable reception is also an issue. I would probably recommend for price and location.

Would not recommend.
Could not eat in facility because of my wife's food allergies. Cleaners were not regular and cleaning was thorough. Trash was not removed from outside bins on a regular basis. We did not see a healthcare person during the time we were there. We left because we were not getting value for money. I do not recommend this facility to anyone.

3. And that is because my husband was in the memory care unit . Very other the food was not warm when served. And several things were in need of repair. When I would go over to visit which was often. The help staff (tech). Was stretched out on the couch covered with blanket taking a nap! I did feel he was cared for there. And most of the staff I liked and trusted. And they contacted me if needed. But some of the staff I was not crazy about. But I was there several nights a week and every weekend. I think that has a large part on how your loved one would be cared for.

Would not recommend
If I didn't go there as often as I did, 5 days. He would not be taken care of. When I was unable to go because of surgery and 12 day hospital stay and recovery, that was five weeks. I know he was not cared for. When I saw him, he was half shaved and had half Santa Claus beard. He had not showered or brushed his teeth. There was empty food containers, and empty plastic and medicine cups. The trash was overflowing. His laundry was done and folded however, he has continued to receive other residence bedding. The facility is worn down, the staff is limited due to high turnover. They do not tend to my husband at all. Because of the location is the only reason he is there. it is not worth the money. Unless you just want to drop off a loved one and not go, your loved one will be not taken care of other than to giving a Styrofoam box for breakfast lunch and dinner. It is not recommended if your spouse is used to care, attention to hygiene and cleanliness of the room, including the bathroom. The staff is nice to me only because I am now there again. I have to ask for his bed to be made, I have notes all over the room, saying the days of the week to shave. shower. And brush his teeth daily. None of those were done when I was not able to go there. I would not recommend this facility to anyone unless they just want to drop off their spouse and walk away. It's a lot of money to pay for no assistance. I am very disappointed. They threw away his mattress and a pair of tennis shoes on [name removed], I believe because he had a bowel movement accident. His mattress had a plastic zip lining to protect the mattress itself yet they threw the entire thing out, and I had to order a new mattress for my husband. They put him on a foam mattress so when he had peed, it went right through the thumb onto the floor. I asked the floor to be clean because it has pee on it and I was told that staff doesn't do that. Only housekeeping and housekeeping was gone for the day. I had to go home and get cleaning supplies. I bought an extra plastic cover for that phone because it was soaked in urine until his new mattress arrived. The new mattress arrived [date removed]. The staff did not put it on his bed until [date removed] The mattress was put on his bed only because I called daily repeatedly to make sure the staff put the new mattress on as I was unable to go see him or I was definitely unable to lift anything over 10 pounds. I would not recommend this facility to anyone Unless they just want to drop their spouse off and walk away. Their spouse will not receive the kind of care that they are accustomed to nor the living area. I am paying a lot of money for them to care for my husband, and I'm the one still taking care of my husband, when I should be recovering. I have another surgery coming up in [date removed] will be gone for a week or two, and I'm not sure again what to expect when I go back and see him. I would not recommend the Palms.

The sales person let it slip on the phone that the company is trying to sell/dump this property (her words). The building is collapsing with the poor infrastructure in place and they refuse to invest the money needed to renovate and correct. She told us the kitchen has been closed for over 3 years and can’t pass inspections with the state or town governments. It smells so bad on the inside, the carpet is gross and the wallpaper is falling off the walls. This is a very sketchy place.

From the minute you meet the salesperson, you know you are being lied to. She tried to make me not believe what I was seeing. The place has a decrepit interior and exterior stuck in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. It smells of urine and wet dog on the inside. The director looked like she hates herself and everything about her place of employment. We were told the AC was being worked on and it had to be around 80 degrees on the inside. We later learned after the tour that they struggle with bed bugs and no functioning dining room and most rooms have no working AC. Did I mention the residents looked like prisoners longing to be be set free?

Jane, thank you for your comments. I am the Executive Director and strongly disagree with your characterization of our community, our team, and especially our residents. We take great pride in maintaining a warm, welcoming environment, and being in compliance with all health and safety standards. Our team is dedicated to supporting and enriching the lives of those we serve, and our residents are a vibrant, amazing group -- and to describe them in any other way is both unfair and unkind. My door is always open for honest, respectful dialogue.

The a/c and heat were out more then they were working. The food wasn't edible. The staff was good from what I heard, but that's the only good thing I can say.

Overall would recommend
The Palms has had some bad luck in the last year with kitchen renovations, the HVAC on the blink and now bedbug issue. All of which they have been dealing with but it's not always in their hands if they can't get parts or workers don't show up. So, while things aren't always ideal, I still think they are a good place, my mom is happy there and I would definitely recommend it.

Extremely short staffed! Only two housekeepers for the whole facility!!!
While visiting my friend at the Palms assisted living today, I found the toilet was clogged, the room was dirty with items all over the floor that my friend cannot lean over to pick up. I was told that the rooms may get cleaned once a week if that. They never came to unclog the toilet so I plunged it myself. There is not enough staff to adequately care for the residence and assisted living.

Unacceptable
Day 46 with no heat or air conditioning. Completely unacceptable. The staff have no answers or updates for the residents or concerned family members. Over 2 years with no operational kitchen to properly provide meals for residents.

I toured for my mother and was very disappointed in the presentation. I was told this a top notch community for Charleston. The community is depressing and the overall atmosphere is one of filthiness and being past its prime. It is obvious it hasn’t been updated in years. The tour was presented as though me and my family were blind and unable to see what was right in front of us. It was actually insulting in the way the sales person believed we were buying what she was attempting to shove down our throat.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know South Carolina’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about South Carolina’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored The Palms of Mt. Pleasant 7.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies.
