The thing we like best is the flexibility of additional care. They keep their prices low by having the base independent living rate, and then we hire on the home care or the PT, the OT the other things that she needs. Because she doesn't need a lot, we're able to keep her cost way below what we would at an assisted-living facility. And as her needs change, we can get changing care, so it suits us perfectly. We also love that each apartment has a little balcony. It's really nice for our mom to be able to sit out on the balcony. She loves that. The rooms are very bright and cheerful. Lots of windows and sunlight. With her low vision that's especially nice.

Resting on 17 acres in central Missouri, this award-winning community is designed to provide a vibrant setting for independent living near various attractions throughout Columbia, like the Museum of Art and Archeology or the Missouri Theatre.
To meet the individual needs of each resident and provide the proper level of assistance, Solstice Senior Living at Columbia provides a variety of services, like in-home assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), urgent response call systems, scheduled transportation, weekly housekeeping, and dietitian-approved meals. Residents can choose from multiple resident-inspired menu options served fresh by the community’s culinary team in a restaurant-style setting. Between meal times and throughout the day, refreshments are available at the coffee and snack bar.

Would not recommend
I would never recommend that place to anyone. We moved them to a different place. So they were only there 4 months. The salon lady was gone. She didn't shown for appointments or was 2 hours late. The food was very bad. And that's saying a lot. I had to bring my parents a lot of meals. And if you went to the dining room. If they past your table before you got there. You didn't get the meal. That needs to really change. You can't be 5 minutes late. It was ridiculous. Matter care for the medicine. They didn't get their meds half the time. The house cleaner only cleaned the toilet and counter in bathroom. Then sweep the floor/moped. But the unit was 80 carpet and they didn't vacuum.

The administration is okay. Staff changes a lot. New cafeteria staff changes almost every week.

Solstice Experience
Very disappointed, but can't afford to move again. Most of the staff is ok. Problems with food and food service. Often run out before everyone is served. Each meal takes an average of 2 hours. Residents are unfriendly not only rude to other residents but to staff as well.

We have told a friend about Solstice. We explained what services are available and how they have had such a positive effect on our loved one. We picked this place over others because of the services, the nice apartments, and the cost. We felt that Mom would be well taken care of, safe, comfortable, and would be more engaged with others. And it is very close to where we live.

Genuinely caring staff
The employees genuinely care about my mom and go out of their way to support her. The activity director works hard to plan a variety of options for the residents. The meals are very good, but the entire process of serving meals sometimes takes over an hour, which is frustrating for some residents.
They are about to renovate the whole facility, it is going to look great.
I would definitely recommend Solstice Senior Living at Columbia to others looking.

They follow any rules to the letter, to include if your husband passes away and you've moved some belongings in but haven't fully moved in yet, you still have to pay full price and give a month's notice. They're the most insensitive people that I've ever dealt with. No compassion whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend them to anybody. Hold onto your dollars, because if you don't have any dollars, they don't care about you in any way, shape, or form.

Staff are friendly and competent. The facilities are kept clean, but have the atmosphere of an older well used hotel. A number of activities are offered throughout the day and week. Issues with cable service remain unresolved. I would recommend them to friends and family.

Inadequate service
This was a nice senior living place but the care cleanliness, and definitely the food (service - meals lack of food and staff -no nutritional meal prepared for different diets/ diabetes) has greatly declined. The price theses residents are paying does not equal to the service that are providied. No staff on call after hours if a fire would occur the residents are left helpless. No Maintance on call after hours. The state needs to investigate that better care is provided for these Seniors.

Very friendly and a good value.
It was a great place. The people were very friendly and very accommodating, and they got my loved one in very quickly. The apartment was perfect and set up really nicely. They were going through some staffing issues though. Because of that, they weren't doing very much of the cleaning, and the food wasn't very good. But I'm hoping that was a temporary problem. They did do a pretty good job with activities though.

I wasn't impressed with this community, even though they were doing renovations. The other concern I had was the community had shared laundry facilities and this would be hard for my loved one.

Declining Services
This used to be a wonderful facility until Solstice took over. They have continually cut services while increasing the rates. My mother's rate increased 30% in 4 years. They stopped providing a 24 hour concierge and internet. If the fire alarms go off during the night, all the residents just have to stand at their doors until someone figures out what is going on as there is no Solstice staff in-house at night.
They say they provide weekly housekeeping services, but they have only cleaned my mom's room 6 times in the last 9 weeks and they have only changed her bed 3 times. Their contract says they will launder linens, but they will not.
On a good note, they have a new chef and my mom likes the food.

Needs improvement on getting what you are paying for
It is supposed to be independent but a lot of the residents are not independent and need more care than they provide here. They seem to be understaffed, it takes forever to get our food. I have been here 7 months and they are supposed to clean my room once a week and they have only been here 4 times. Due to my experience so far, I would not recommend at this time.

I would tell others that it is a nice place to go, and it is clean. The staff try to work with the residents.
The more tenured staff dealt better with the residents overall, than the younger staff.
The food was enjoyed by my loved one.

Highly recommend
We chose Solstice Senior Living because they are one of the facilities that provide 3 meals a day and we really liked that. They also have medical staff on site if needed. They use their times to eat as social hour and they make it fun for the residents. They have a ton of amenities that you would need to live a nice healthy life. I would recommend to others looking.
