Wish We Hadn't Put Our Mother There
We made a major mistake of placing our precious mother in a home in Gahanna , Ohio through Senior Home Choice. She was there for ten months and died. There isn't enough room to elaborate for as much as I would like to say . To start off with she shouldn't have been admitted .I found out before her death through licensing that the workers were not supposed to crush her pills. They were doing that illegally. My mother wasn't able to swallow the pills so in order for her to take them they were supposed to be crushed but not at any ACF. Only nurses or doctors were supposed to handle the medicine. At one point she was given extra pills which I caught . I don't know how many extra pills she had . This could have killed her because this was blood pressure medicine. She was in and out of the hospital for bladder infections. A worker left her keys in the living room and went to tend to someone while leaving my mother unattended . According to the worker she said my mother got up grabbed the keys and fell on them thus slitting her finger. The bleeding was bad. A few days later I told another worker to please keep an eye on my mother who had fallen slitting her finger.I got a call that my mother had fallen and hit her eye on a table and she slit the top of her left eyebrow which required stitches .She also had a severe black eye .The worker could have put mom in the kitchen with her while she was making dinner but didn't .I noticed my mother had bruising on her left leg one day .One day I was visiting and noticed my mother's thumbnail was split in half.I asked the head of household who stated it must have been an accident I came back another time and noticed the other thumbnail was split in half and bloody. I got a call at around two thirty in the middle of the night one day and was told she was bleeding in her urine.I ran to the hospital where the doctor stated she had scratches around her female area and was bleeding from inside .Mom had bloody skin rips on her left arm, also .I asked the nurse where she was staying, about this and he said it wasn't abuse .What would you call it? The hospital could not rule out abuse. We will never know. The doctors brought the police into the situation as they are required to report any incident if they suspect abuse. It's the state law . One worker stated she was having trouble scrounging up food one day and mom was fed pureed peanut butter I then noticed there weren't any clean pajamas for mom.I reported that to the head supervisor The same worker stated one day she wasn't seeing a lot of groceries . Once when mom had gotten out of the hospital I knocked on the door and the head of household wouldn't answer the door.I waited for around fifteen minutes and she still wouldn't answer the door.I called the police to gain access and then she answered the door. She claimed she was in the basement getting ornaments. In that case mom, a risk fall, was left unattended as well as another man who needed constant supervision. When the police left the head of household started screaming at me that she was going to restrict my visitation hours. She spent hours making a sign and printing it out and placing it on the wall . Licensing came out and made the worker to take it down .You can't restrict visitation hours It was time and time again I had trouble getting in to visit mom when the head of household was there because she had excuses why she couldn't get to the door. Oh yes and then it was the night I went to visit in the dead of winter and I knocked and knocked with no answer.I was outside in my car in the cold for an hour.I called her supervisor and she stated the head of household was with a patient. What for an hour.I thought I'm not going home I had a long drive. When I did get inside it was around six o'clock and Mom was sitting in the dark and had not eaten .I told the worker it was dark inside so she changed the light bulb which hadn't been changed for weeks I thought if I hadn't been there would mom have had dinner. I had brought a purple blanket and purple throw for Mom that disappeared .I asked the head of household and she said it must be in the laundry. Well the blanket was gone for weeks and I had to borrow one from a lady who visited. One day I asked a worker about the blanket and asked if I could look in the downstairs laundry. She said she guessed. The blanket wasn't there . Mom's glasses were broken four times and I had to keep getting them repaired. The same head of household tried to make Mom take a nap which was to keep me from seeing her and one day she put her in bed, shut the door,. and proceeded to blare gospel music so loud that you wouldn't have been able to hear my Mother yelling or she might have tried to get up and fall .When the worker did get her up I asked where was her hearing aid. She said she didn't know. This went on for a long time. I went to use the restroom and came out ready to leave and the hearing aid was back in mom's ear. Another day when I visited ,my mother was in bed and the worker stated she wasn't allowed to get her up. You could see from the living room that Mom's legs were dangling from the bed and she wanted up . I wanted Mom to walk around instead of sitting and I did this when I visited after spoon feeding her each day. The head of household wanted her to take a nap and I tried to get Mom up from the chair but couldn't .I asked the head of household to help me.She told me to do it myself .As I was trying to lift Mom up she fell back in the chair. These are just some things that went on. I cannot believe this place is still in business. I wanted my Mother out of there but I wasn't the power of attorney. I now have flashbacks daily of the things that happened. The doctors at the hospital told me not to put her back there .Again I wasn't the power of attorney. Before Mom died she had a bedsore on her bottom according to the hospice nurse .That nurse said the Alzheimer's patients don't adjust themselves and they need to be gotten up each hour to prevent from getting bedsores. These were the last years of my Mother's life that should have been better but weren't. I went to visit her which was daily .I spoon fed her because she wasn't able to She had crippling arthritis in her hands. She wasn't able to dress herself or use the restroom herself. She did recognize me because her face would light up and I would ask her over and over what her name was and what her daughter's name was. I only have pictures left to cherish my memories of Mom in earlier years when she didn't have Alzheimer's .

Tour was Nice One
My tour of this community went well. The staff was kind, and cordial. From what I was shown the community looked nice. I did find another community that suited our needs better, but my tour did go well overall.

Amazing Staff to Resident Ratio
Everything is going well and good. I like that there are 5 women residents and the ratio for the staff to resident is excellent. It is better than other places. They are giving her good food and if she is not wanting to eat they try with options she would prefer. She has activities and outings always available to try.

They keep the care home clean!!!
I have never seen a caretaker do anything with a patient that concerned me. They seem very good with the residents. There have been no complaints about the food. The only minor complaint I have is that the men's bathroom is to small. I would not really recommend this care home but I would say to go check it out to see if it works for you.
