Disgusted with Quail Haven
Would not recommend and we moved our Mother to another facility. They do not clean the rooms, staff (nurses and admin) along with some CNA's are rude and inattentive, food is awful. They increased the rate by $400 a month stating Mom required add'l services but offered none.

Horrible, Horrible Place
Quail Haven Village in Pinehurst, NC is horrible. My father was admitted for rehab on Friday, November 14, 2014. I work and stay in Raleigh during the week and came down Friday night to see him. I was a bit concerned by all the white call lights on and skeleton staff. He was asleep and I spoke briefly to the night nurse who seemed aware of my father’s condition. I returned on Saturday, November 15, 2014. The staff had let my father sit in his feces for hours after "forgetting" he had called. When I asked the nurse to clean him up, she accused him of not pressing the call button and began to argue with me. At one point, five staff members were yelling at me in the hall. They refused to clean up my father until I "treated them with respect". They don't accurately record when they give him his pain medications and when I asked to see the paper records, they refused. Staff falsifies records. I had to ask for my father's catheter bag to be emptied since it was full, the supervisor said her "records" showed that I "demanded" the staff empty his bag when it was only 200. I informed her the bag was at 2000 not 200 and suggested their record-keeping was not adequate. She again denied any staff malfeasance. I said, "OK, don't believe, I'll just take photos the next time." The supervisor told me that I was "not allowed to take photographs." The staff members removed their nametags and refused to speak with either my father or me and the same woman who started the argument with me gave us multiple names (Wanda and Pearl). I recorded a conversation in which the supervisor, Joan Vasilik, told me that I am "not allowed to ask staff members their names" which is a violation of NC Law 90-640. Identification badges required. The place reeks of urine and feces. After my altercation, I left for a few hours. When I returned, the "nurse" who started the argument with me went into my father's room and yelled at him. Apparently, the staff is taking their anger out on my father, took his water mug away and “forgot” to return it for two hours. They refused to provide him with extra pillows so I brought some from home. Rooms have no phones so patients/inmates can't call for family to help them. The food is ALWAYS served cold, the food is inedible and the food service people are annoyed when you ask them to reheat it. Until we can get him out of this hellhole, we're providing his food. To summarize: Only put your elderly here if you hate them and want them to suffer. Staff forges records. Patients have no way to call for help. Staff turns off call buttons. Staff denies errors. Staff argues and refuses to provide basic services. Staff is sloppy with distribution of pain medications. Staff refuses to wear nametags or identify themselves. Supervisors aren't interested in improving staff, just protecting them. Staff is used to bullying old people with diminished mental capabilities. Food is sub-standard and served cold.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living.
