A Good, Safe, Clean Place for My Mom
My mom lives there. Everything is kept spotlessly clean and she is well-cared for. I feel she is safe. She likes the food (I think it smells good when I am there and it is cooking) and the staff is friendly and responsive to my questions and concerns. True, the only activity they offer is Bingo but my mom also goes to an adult day care several times a week. The grounds are nicely maintained and gated for safety. You are getting a good value for the cost. If you want a lot of activities and other fancy amenities, you would have to pay a lot more. I did my research and feel this is the best place in her price range.

RUN the other way!
This place is horrible. DO NOT take your loved ones there. The CNA/Housekeeping staff does not speak nor understand English. The food is terrible. It is donated to Oak Hill, therefore most of it is canned or frozen. There are no activities, except Bingo. Like the other reviewer stated, if your loved one has no idea what's going on around them, this place would be somewhat OK. Please find someplace else!

Great Care For Your Loved Ones
I would highly recommend Oak Hill Residential Care for the needs of your loved ones. My father has been a resident for over 2 years now and is doing better than ever. He has all types of issues and needs full time help with everyday living. They have good caring helpers and a great staff of nurses that help my dad daily. They take care of all his medications and they even have a Doctor that comes to the facility to take care of all the loved one's needs. Another plus is the place is very affordable for the care you receive

Had a bad experience here
We did not have a good experience here at all. I really was not pleased with any aspect of the community, and I didn't feel like my loved one was being cared for at all. I do not recommend this place.

A word of warning: consider this review before leaving loved one at Oak Hill
The place is clean. That's the high point. Beyond that, I would NOT recommend Oak Hill Nursing Home in Escondido to anyone who cares about their loved one. In fact, run the other direction! Here's why: the rooms are basically 2-bed hospital rooms. No privacy for residents. The caregivers do not speak English or do not speak it well enough to effectively communicate with residents. Nurses make themselves scarce. The caregivers seem to also be the maids, so the education, qualifications, and experience level of these aides is questionable. There are NO activities to engage residents' minds, bodies or spirits, with the exception of bingo. My loved one is high functioning yet is placed in a building with people who are not. Some yell down the hallways constantly in their delirium or dementia and it is not only heartbreaking but unnerving to residents who are trying to rest, eat or just have a peaceful existence. If your loved one is completely taken over by dementia, senility or Alzheimer's and does not know what is going on at all, MAYBE this would be a place to consider. However, if their cognitive abilities are still even partially intact, this nonprofit alternative to nursing care is not the place for them. They will not be nurtured and thrive in their golden years at Oak Hill. In fact, the lack of respect, engaging activities, socializing and compassionate care will likely accelerate their decline. There are surely much better options in Escondido for your loved one!

Lack of activities, but still a great place!
The only downside about Oak Hill is that it doesn't offer a large range of activities. It is clean, bright, and the staff is great. I even met with the owner on my tour, and he was very cooperative. He gave me a lot of information, and told me about the Assisted Living Waiver Program as well. This will definitely help out financially, and is one of the reasons why I am considering moving my grandmother here.

Although Mom has been with the residential center only a week or so, she seems to be adjusting well to the facilities. Caretakers are very nice. Food is excellent.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the California regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about California regulations for Assisted Living.
