My loved one was a resident at Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living. Overall, the experience was poor. The friendliness was good. However, the cleanliness and the food were not good. The staff and the quality of care were poor. I would not recommend this facility to family and friends.

My Tour Experience at Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living
I toured Hawthorne Gardens and loved it, but again, it was a no-go as they did not have the staffing to provide 2-person transfer/assist. The lady there was very apologetic and noted post-covid staffing issues. She went above and beyond, however, and gave me many helpful suggestions that were extremely useful in my search. The lady there really went out of her way to be helpful (which was deeply appreciated given the circumstances and that I needed to find a place ASAP). While I have no actual experience with how the care is, etc., I was really struck by how happy the residents seemed and how comfortable they were with staff - that spoke volumes. If my husband's needs had been different, we would have gone with Hawthorne Gardens.

New management at Hawthorne Gardens
In November 2022, I wrote a positive review about Hawthorne Gardens and its wonderful executive director. Recently there has been a corporate shakeup and she has been let go and many other staff have also left or been fired. Rates have gone up and services have deteriorated badly, including care, food, cleaning, social activities. The residents are in shock and morale is at an all time low. Not a good time to place your loved one here.

Outstanding care
My Mom due to advancing Dementia moved into Hawthorne Gardens 3 months ago from another outstanding place, (Facility Name Removed). Although the stay at Hawthorne Gardens was brief, the care she got was outstanding. The staff, at the Memory Care Unit, and I know just a few and met only a few, (Names Removed) made those last months so much nicer for my Mom. Memory Care is very much about getting the residents engaged. With a staff per resident ratio better than what an Assisted Living can do, my Mom was more involved in activities. (Name Removed) sent me pictures of outings with my Mom smiling in each picture. Although my Mom could be “picky” about food, the food that (Name Removed) and her staff prepared, Mom's comments were that the food was “good”, vs “all right”. The short time I was there, I did have the opportunity to eat there and the dinner was well done and tasty. This job that all the above do and so many others is a calling. This is not just a job, I saw

Some pluses. Some challenges.
The facility itself is nice and well maintained. Administrative staff was friendly and mostly responsive. Service staff were hit and miss as far as training and proficiency. Food in the dining room was acceptable .... brought to the room .... unacceptable.

Great place to live, helpful staff, has everything Grandma needs
It is a really great place to live. Aside of the fact that they seem short staffed and having trouble keeping up on the housekeeping. Our loved one really loves is. All the staff are doing a great job making sure her meds are on time, she is well taken care of, has everything she needs. Only con is the housekeeping issue. They are very responsive when we reach out with any concerns.

A Caring Facility With Good But Shortage of Staffing
This is a nice community and a good size for my loved one. I think Hawthorne Gardens is short of staff just like a lot of the communities are today. There are times that my loved one belongings have disappeared or I can't find them when I go to visit.

[name removed] the tour guide was great. She was honest and professional and listened intently to my mom's needs. I left feeling optimistic as they had a light filled corner room and seemed to have folks my mom would befriend. Unfortunately the room with the man next door was emanating a terrible smell and the door was left completely open--2 employees were trying to help him, I got a glance at a difficult and again, extremely foul smelling, situation. It was just bad luck but those things have a way of marking what was an otherwise very positive experience. I'm a bit torn on this place. GREAT location, beautiful neighborhood. I liked that the assisted living was on one floor and seemed smallish, like my mom would get personal attention. Feels small and intimate compared to others I've visited.

It is OK.
My mom lived there for about a year and a half in the assisted living portion. Lots of turn over in management and staff during that time. The staff was helpful, although many things were inexplicably difficult. They could provide medication, but would not administer eye drops. The food went from OK to bad, to downright inedible due to turn over in the kitchen. Show up for a regular meal, not a brunch for a true taste. Scheduling transportation to doctors visits is often unhelpful as they will not escort your parent to the actual waiting room. They get a curb drop off. Also, scheduling outside of the pretty narrow pre-defined transport opportunities (one or two days a week) is difficult. Communication from the staff was OK regarding my mother's health. The staff would sometimes call, but other times, including an ER transport, would fail to make contact with a family member. Health events that may seem minor were not communicated unless you asked to see the health logs or notes. The rooms at HG are nice enough. The air conditioning and heating is provided by a through-wall unit which has a noisy fan. Windows can also be opened for outside air. The biggest concern was that at the end of my mother's life, they refused to allow her to have hospice at the facility. They would not provide care for her and we end up scrambling to find a new place for hospice (which there are few on-demand options!) at the very end when she was very ill. That is not a good outcome. Be sure to understand what care will and will not be provided during times of declining health as you may be surprised to be caring for your loved one while scrambling to find a facility at the same time. If you read this far, you already know, but you should read the inspection log book that they are required to have in the lobby. It tells about any findings by inspectors and what actions they took.

Hawthorne Gardens is NOT What it Advertises
Our mother has lived at Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living since the fall of 2018, first in Assisted Living and for the past year in Memory Care. In this time there have been three different companies running the place, all of them promising to improve things. Staff turnover is alarming with many only lasting a week or two. They are ill trained and over worked. They have little to no supervision. Memory Care is far worst than assisted living. Our mother's room is often filthy. Your feet stick to the bathroom floor and her rug hasn't been vacuumed in 3 months. It literally stinks. Laundry is not done regularly and when it is done, clothes are often ruined. Our mother often does not have the basic necessities like toilet paper and kleenex. If we did not check on her EVERY DAY, I would fear for her overall safety. Hawthorne Gardens is not what it appears to be in their advertisements or on the tour. The tour is so ridiculously deceiving.

My experience with Hawthorne Gardens memory care
MY mom resides in the memory care at Hawthorne Gardens. It is a beautiful building, and appears to be well staffed, and the employees appeared to be engaged with the residents on my initial walk through. After an unannounced visit I made to visit my mother in memory care one morning, I was shocked to see how different things really are. The memory care unit was short staffed, it was dirty and there were residents screaming, and the staff and memory care manager, [Removed]. were present, and no one cared. I am not happy, and unimpressed by the lack of professionalism in this memory care, and will be removing my mother from this dreadful place, and will be making sure the public is aware of how this place is really ran. The manager is lazy, and the staff is untrained, and unprofessional. It is not a safe environment, and I have seen a huge decline in my mother, and other residents since I have put my mother here. This place should be closed down!!!

My parents happy new home
This is a nice community for my parents, who live together on the memory care floor. The staff is nice and caring. The community is clean and they are happy with the atmosphere. There is no dietitian on staff and the menu is just ok. They have activities 2x per week on the memory floor. It would be great if there was something every day of the week to get them out of their room and more active. On the week-ends there is less staff, so if one resident has an issue - other residents will wait. We recommend this community to other families for the good care and the value. An extremely helpful benefit to this community is a support group they have for the loved ones of the memory care floor. It's an important part of my parent's care.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Oregon regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Oregon regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living 6.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
