Do your homework
Our experience was very disappointing overall. When we first brought my sister in, no one greeted us. We had to search for someone to tell us her room number and where it was located. After that, we were basically left on our own and told very little about what to expect or what to do. We spent about an hour just wandering around until dinner. The cleaning was acceptable some of the time, but there were major issues. During the first week, all of her clothes went missing. I purchased all new clothes, and within a few weeks those items disappeared as well. We were never reimbursed, and every time we asked about the missing clothing, we were simply told they would “look for them,” but nothing was ever resolved. Eventually, I started doing her laundry myself. One day, my nephew visited and found bloody paper towels in the bathroom, garbage overflowing, and the room in poor condition. The quality of care was unacceptable. She often did not receive her medications, and she was regularly served food she could not eat, such as salads, despite missing many of her teeth and being unable to chew properly. She lost a significant amount of weight while there and became very gaunt. I understand she was not very mobile, but she still needed proper nutrition and care. Whenever we visited, there rarely seemed to be staff around. Usually there was one person sitting at the station, if anyone at all, and no one else to be found. While some staff members appeared friendly on the surface, my sister frequently complained about how mean they were to her. Administration was only somewhat satisfactory. They never addressed the issue with her missing clothes or took meaningful action. Their response was always vague and dismissive. As for activities, I rarely saw any taking place. One day I visited and saw residents getting their nails done, playing games, and participating in activities, but my sister was never included. I do not know whether she declined participation, but staff should have at least offered her the opportunity by bringing her in her wheelchair and asking if she wanted to join. Considering the cost — approximately $[Amount removed] per month — we absolutely did not receive the level of care we were paying for. She was not properly fed, did not consistently receive medications, and spent most of her time sitting in front of the television with very little interaction or engagement. We eventually brought her home on [Date Removed] so I could care for her myself. She gained weight while living with me, but caregiving became extremely stressful because I was balancing her care with many other responsibilities. Later, we moved her to a private care home, where she is now receiving excellent care. Her meals have been adapted so she can eat comfortably, she receives proper grooming and foot care, and she appears much happier overall. In my opinion, this facility is not equipped to properly care for individuals with advanced dementia. Families should understand that people with dementia require specialized attention and compassionate care, and unfortunately, we did not find that here.

We had a lovely tour! [removed name] was great, showed us around and explained the move in procedure. I loved the apartments and the size was about right. The dining room was beautiful. Menu looked good. I really liked the theater! Have to wait and see if Ted chooses to move there.

Would not recommend
The administrative staff tried to retroactively raise the level of care without consulting me. They sent my brother (the resident) to the ER and then refused to take him any personal effects after we decided to transfer him. They were quite uncooperative. The actual caregivers were very nice and kind to my brother.

not recommend with room for improvement.
Housekeeping in rooms very inconsistent. Understaffed. Do not have people or systems to care for residents in different stages of dementia/Alzheimer's. It has been constantly changing. We have to supplement with special foods my dad enjoys. I think it is a communication problem between the memory care staff and kitchen. They cater to those patience with severe dementia. Not those in the middle stages. While it is a beautiful facility we pay a lot of money for minimum care.

Comes up short
Daily food has lost its luster. What used to be fabulous is now lacking. This has been brought up several times with no change. Very disappointing. The cleaning staff has left, and clean rooms are in the past. Residents are cleaning and vacuuming their own rooms now. Residents have complained but again nothing has happened. Most residents won’t complain for fear of being kicked out. Feel free to contact me, I’ll help.

Beautiful Facility-not great communication
Field’s is a beautiful facility in Spokane Valley. The staff are caring and kind to my brother. They are not great at communicating what is happening with him and he is having advancing cognitive difficulties and can’t communicate directly with me. To be fair a lot of the staff is new and hopefully will settle into their procedures.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Washington’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Washington’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
