Cole AFH

I chose Cole AFH to take care of my loved one. I was initially very impressed during tour. The place was immaculate and pristine. I was also very impressed with all they had to say. I officially moved my loved one in on [date removed]. I received a call the next morning that my loved one had been sleep walking the night before. I told them yes, this happens, as he does have Alzheimer's it is very common. The owner was immediately upset behind this, but I wasn't sure why because they told me that they had tons of experience with Alzheimer residents. The management/owner seemed obsessed with keeping things immaculate and she implied that his sleepwalking would interfere with that. During my loved one's sleep walking episodes, he accidentally went out an exit door - mistaking it for the bathroom - which set off an alarm. He also accidentally opened a couple of other residents doors, again, mistaking it for the bathroom. They told me that he opened many doors before he actually found the bathroom. Management's response to this, was "this can't happen". I suggested that their night staff could maybe sit outside of his room for the first new nights and assist him if he does night walk, the owner was not willing to do that. I also suggested using babyproofing methods so that the only door that can be opened is the bathroom door. Instead of doing that, the owner somehow found it appropriate to lock my loved one in his room? She called the following morning yet again, complaining of not getting any rest because my loved one spent all night knocking on his door to be let out. This went on for a few more days before they appeared on my doorstep at midnight with my loved one. They did not give a proper 30 day notice, nor notified me that they were on the way. They just put him out. The owner yelled at me about my loved one breaking the lock on his door and requested that I pay for the installation of a new one. This was completely unacceptable. They spent a lot of time assuring me that they could handle my loved ones level of care. They mentioned (on several occasions) that they had plenty of knowledge and were much equipped to care for those with Alzheimer's. They should not have accepted my loved one, if they could not fit his needs. My decision to transition my loved one into a care home was a very difficult one. I wanted to make sure he was kept safe, and cared for properly. Our experience with Cole AFH was extremely traumatic; not only for my loved one, but for myself as well. Not only did we have to go through the inconvenience of finding a new care home on such short notice; this also created additional confusion and anxiety for my loved one, having been moved to three environments that were new to him, all within a week. He has been at a new community since [date removed] and it has been a 100% positive experience so far. He seems to be thriving there and is doing much better. Before officially moving into the new community, I had to spend an hour completing a slew of legal documents and forms. Cole AFH did not require any type of paperwork, so I have added concerns that they may not be registered/licensed. This may be an okay place for those who don't need an advanced level of care, I'm not sure. But if your loved one needs more attention and is not content with sitting in a chair all day, I would stay far far away.

My mother has been living in this facility for over 2 years and our family is very pleased with the care she receives. They are very interactive with the patients and very kind and caring. It is a small family home so it feels like a home rather than just a big hospital or care facility. I wish everyone could live in this type of setting. They go out of their way to be accommodating to the patients needs.
