Review for Charter Senior Living of Williamsburg
It is great so far. The facility is clean, modern, well maintained and very pleasant. It seems like staff are engaged with the residents, always sitting with them and talking. As opposed to residents sitting on their own while staff are engaged with their cell phones. I have access (the door code) to come and go on my own. We picked this community because of the price and the looks of the facility.

Pros and cons of a small facility
Comments - very caring and the small facility means the staff knows the residents. Downside: constant turnover of managers and team leads, I don't think any were in place more than 3 months. Except the cook who is their best asset.

Would never recommend
I would stay away from Charter. I know each facility has mixed reviews, and maybe some residents are happy there. I can only tell you that my dad did not receive adequate and proper care. I visited often, never found him anywhere but in his room. One night, my son and I came in and he was climbing into bed, very early evening, with a mess ( bowel). Thank God my son was with me because, no matter how many times we pulled the nurse cord, no one came. We went hunting for help, none on that floor to be found. An aide, who said she wasn't supposed to shower the patients, kindly helped my son clean my dad while I changed his messy bed. I immediately went to find a better place and found [facility name removed]. Night and day difference. I would NEVER recommend Charter.

Caring Environment
My Aunt came to Charter several months ago, in search of a caring environment. She had lived for three years at another Senior living facility. She was always complaining about the staff and food. Since coming to Charter she has become a much happier person. She talks highly of the staff and love her room. She enjoys sitting out in the court yard enjoying the weather. The other residents are very friendly and have made her feel at home. I would highly recommend Charter Senior Living to anyone searching for a place for their live one. They will be well cared for at Charter.

Charter Senior Living Williamsburg
We have been very pleased having moved my mother-in-law into assisted living with Charter in Williamsburg. Although they are short staffed, like all facilities are, they do make the effort to have high quality care and a friendly attitude. The food is very good, the accommodations are very nice, much like a good hotel. And we find that the staff works with us very well, answering questions, making suggestions, being very attentive to anything we need.

Has room for improvement
Consistently understaffed to the point of being probably illegal. Some days there would be one dedicated person with med techs and front staff having to fill in. Consequently the 15 or 16 residents weren't cleaned properly, sat in their soiled clothing and some getting bedsores. Residents' rooms weren't cleaned properly, rarely mopped. Kitchen cabinets looked nasty and sticky. I don't think they were cleaned once in the five weeks we were there. Carpet was filthy. The trash was taken out frequently. One staff member had an ongoing feud with me. It's still a mystery to me what it was about as she was angry and refused to discuss the matter with me. Otherwise, some staff was friendly and some were rather standoffish. Overall, I think they tried to provide decent care. Again, lack of staff definitely deterred having a better quality of care. I heard a few harsh words from staff to residents but overall I think the staff were kind to residents. I think the food was on the less expensive end. Not much in the way of choices. Residents were in front of the TV a lot. Otherwise, it was mostly coloring. Not much one on one with residents. Considering the lack of cleanliness and staff shortages, I didn't feel like we were getting our money's worth. If those issues were addressed and prioritized I then think it would have been a fair price. I will give the Memory Care Director a "5." She worked tirelessly. But she wasn't properly supported by the director (who has since left thankfully.)

Peace of mind
We knew it was the right fit the moment we walked in. There is no odor all all when you walk in the facility. They did get a new director and he is very nice. I know all of the staff and they are great, I have had no complaints what so ever. The quality of care is excellent. My mom can be a handful and they never skip a beat. She is treated with so much respect and kindness. The food is great. they have a wonderful chef and the residents have a few choices for each meal. They feed them breakfast, a large lunch, and then a lighter dinner. We have eaten there a couple of times and it is great. It is worth every penny especially for the care she receives. I would highly recommend this facility a hundred times around.

Our families experience
We really like that the community is very friendly and small enough that everyone knows everyone there and the staff know all the residents by their name. They are very willing to step up and do what is needed to be done if you ask. The downsize is that either they are understaffed or poorly managed to the extent that we find pretty routinely things that have not been done - laundry, house keeping, etc. They sometimes don't seem to know who is in charge and it takes us getting a few different people to figure it out

We were happy with Charter Senior Living
We had to move my husband from one place that was eventually taken over by Charter as we were leaving. We were very unhappy with them, then they changed hands after one month. We moved him to this Charter Senior Living of Williamsburg and we were very happy with them. They were very kind and good to my husband, he was happy with them as well.

Be on top of the game
My loved one wasn't there for long, she had a stroke several days after being admitted. I would say they were somewhat responsive to her needs. We were told not to visit for a month, so we didn't get to see what was going on. You might want to ask questions to get a status update, I had to call in to see how she was doing. I did have to call because after a week I didn't hear anything from them. Communication could be improved; for people who are being admitted they need to provide some sort of update on how they are adjusting. My loved one was admitted to their memory care unit, and since we were asked not to visit we didn't get to see things in action. I did see activities, but not where my loved one was participating in them. They seemed to have lots of activities going on for memory care though. They asked us to not to visit so that they could get our loved one acclimated first, without causing interference or feelings of wanting to go home. I think they are doing a good job, the other residents I saw seemed to be doing well. The place was very clean; the backend of the place was very well cleaned, so I think they did well for cleanliness. Communication was very general and they are good at that. The executive director did send texts with general information regarding the community, but I was looking for more personal updates on how my loved one was acclimating since I wasn't allowed to visit - and I had to call for that because I did not know.

Tour of Morningside
Morningside is an older more worn facility but it is still very nice. We were really impressed with the shape of the building, it is an O shape with a large center atrium for residents. One thing we did not like was that there was no carpet, it was all cold concrete floors.

Thank you for visiting with us. We're glad to see that you liked the beautiful atrium at the center of our community, as it is a gathering place enjoyed by all our residents. Please note that at Morningside of Williamsburg we have carpet throughout the common spaces and our apartments have either carpet or the plank-wood flooring. We invite you back in for a second look!
