One or two were professional and concerned about the patients. Others not performing their positions to a standard. I would not recommend this facility to anyone. The people that are living there now are complaining.

Not recommended for Memory Care
My brother was in the memory care unit. As long as he was calm and not causing any problems, the staff tolerated him. I found out when he was to be kicked out that he was too much trouble. Even though I was assured that they could handle his condition. I would not recommend this facility to anyone seeking memory care.

An active and caring community, would recommend for a great place for your loved ones
Our loved one was only there for a short time, but we had a wonderful experience. When we first took the tour we had stopped to speak with a few residents and asked them if they liked living there and they said they loved being at Charter Senior Living. Everyone there seemed so happy, and active. The residents always had a smile on their face and you could hear them bantering back and forth with the staff members. It has such a positive and happy atmosphere to it. The staff members are just wonderful. Every evening and even sometimes during the day the residents would just go hang out with one another the hallways and talk back and forth and really just enjoys each others company. The meals and dining service is very very good. They also have a ton of different activities, even though our loved o inne did not have the chance to participate in them they were great. Every time we visited residents were either off loading on the bus or getting on it to go on some day trip. We do think the value for the money was very good, compared to other facilities in the area they are very reasonable.

Tour experience
Charter Senior Living was VERY expensive. They do not accept anything but Patriot Angels to help with the cost. The facility to me just seemed cold and sterile. The facility itself was very spread out and you had to go through many doors to get places, it was a lot of walking for the residents. The sales people called me to death and it was just all about the business, not about the care.

Tour experience
The whole experience was a joke. We showed up for the tour and no one was there to give us the tour, so someone random stepped up. They said once it was over they would call us and they did, but it was 3 weeks later. They looked to be very short staffed. It also had that nursing home smell and feel to it. I would not recommend the facility to anybody based off of what we saw.

nice community
The only problem we think this community has ran into is just with staffing and loosing some workers but we understand that is everyone, overall this community is really nice and we have heard no complaints from our loved one. We are happy we got our loved one a first floor apartment. They have a ton of different activities to keep the residents busy. One week they had like a big "take a cruise" where they would do different things each day and at the end of the week had a big cruise dinner where families could come. They have bingo a few times a week. They have different social hours especially when it is someone's birthday. They also have outings to different grocery stores and museums. We would recommend Charter Senior Living to other families.

Would not recommend
My Mother has been there [removed]. When Charter took over the level of cleanliness and the ability to receive calls from the director has gone way down. Was there on [date removed] and the 2nd floor reeked of urine. Several doors to the residents rooms were open and I was appalled at how some of them looked as far as cleanliness. I would not give them a very good rating. There are nurses there that are very caring but the people in charge are very hard to get ahold of address complInts. Not happy right now with my Mothers level of care!

Tour of Charter Senior Living
I toured Charter Senior Living of Newport News and we would have gone here, but there were no openings. They participated in PACE, so if we ran out of funds we knew that there would an alternative. We wouldn't have had to find Medicaid, as I was looking at long-term solutions. There was no availability at this location, so we chose the Charter Senior Living in Williamsburg.

Seems Decent
They have changed ownership, and everything has been a little messy since then. Other than that it's been okay. I would urge families to wait to move loved ones in until after things have settled down with the change in ownership. And then it's always a good idea to keep in close contact with the management and staff there to make sure that things that need to be addressed get addressed. The overall building is quite nice and decorated well. They have a nice library. They offer pretty standard activities like bingo, trivia, movies. I think they could do more to encourage the residents to attend them, or to find out what the residents want to do that hey would like to participate in.

We chose Morningside of Newport because we were impressed with the staff when we started looking. They are friendly, outgoing, and the manner in which they spoke to the residents was very positive. It is also a smaller facility which we felt would be better for mom and have more personalized care. I would definitely recommend to others looking.

Tour of Morningside
The tour was lovely and the gal giving us the tour was great. They do have a beautiful courtyard and the residents rooms open up to it. When we were touring though we did not see many residents out at all and no one was utilizing the courtyard. It was just a little more depressing than some other places we looked into.

A beautiful place that was almost perfect, but sloppy with the medication
Our loved one was there for respite care and during her stay the community was kept spotless clean. Everyone was extremely friendly even on the first day we got there, everyone from the house keeping to the maintenance team came and welcomed our loved one. Our loved one tends to be a picky eater but overall the meals were excellent. They did have activities going on for those who could and wanted to participate in them. However the only negative we had, was when we were moving out our loved one the medical aid came by with all of our loved ones medication for us to sign off of and take home. Not even an hour after getting home, they called us to see if another patients medication got put into the bag and in fact there was another residents medicine. My husband drove back to the facility to return to medication but the medical aid left for the day and no one else knew what was going on. Also we later founded out not all of our loved ones medication was put into that bag either.

Thank you for your feedback Laura. I am the Executive Director and was so glad to read that your loved one had a wonderful stay with us and you were all impressed with the team and community. It was especially great to see that your picky eater loved the food and that you all felt so welcomed from their very first day. I was sorry to hear about the mixup with the medication when you left however, and would welcome the chance to chat about this when you have a moment as we are always looking to listen and improve. Please give me a call at your convenience so I can better understand what occurred. Thanks in advance -- and thanks again for choosing Morningside of Newport News for your loved one’s respite stay.
