Blessed we found Brookdale Farmington Hills North
My family blessed to have found Brookdale. From the very first day meeting with the salesperson, our family has had a peace of mind knowing that Mom is getting excellent care. Kind and caring staff.
Kind and caring staff, responsive to client and family needs. Staff, make sure to come and get clients to participate in meals and activities, which I very much appreciate. The facility itself is safe, secure and very homelike. They should really pay the staff more so that they don't lose the staff that they have, which currently is very kind and attentive. I have seen high turnover in many places, less here than most. Maintaining staff assures greater continuity of care, and it's so important.

Great Care
My mom was a resident of Brookdale for about 18 months. The staff and In House Hospice worked together to provide her with excellent care. It didn’t matter if visited in the morning, afternoon, evening, or late at night. She was cared for well! She truly became a part of the Brookdale family. They were patient with her, took the time to care for her particular needs, and went over and beyond expectations. Communication was good. Compassion was evident. There were so many fun activities planned from holiday parties, fun get togethers, outings to restaurants, etc.. They bring in live entertainment regularly. They even have a secure outdoor courtyard for residents to go outside when the weather is nice. Even though I live out of state, I did not have any concerns knowing they were taking good care of her in between my visits. Don’t hesitate to put your loved one in their care.

Compassion you can trust
Choosing memory care for your wife if not easy, but from the moment we walked into the community, we knew it was home for my wife. It is a smaller community, and that makes a difference. Every resident is known. The team is kind, caring and attentive. Management is responsive and caring. The administrator is involved with the residents; the activities are just what my wife needed.

I toured with [removed name] for my mom. I was very impressed with all the residents. They were engaged, in what they wanted to do. I saw a resident that walked the community. Staff would stop to make sure she was good. My mom also wanders and I find it hard to keep her at home, there just is not enough room. I really could see my mom living here.

Much room for improvement
After about a week of moving my dad into memory care, he eloped and was found lying in grass by a passerby. Facility did not know he was missing and could not explain how he was able to get out. Seven days went by without dad having a shower. His clothing has not been changed daily, (he was also sleeping in his clothes). He was changed after I observed him in the same outfit for 36-48 hours and requested it be done. I have spoken with management multiple times and issues are currently being addressed.

Major decline in all metrics from beginning of stay to end
Overall experience: This number changes from the beginning of her stay to the end. Much higher at the beginning. I'd give it a 4. By the end it was between a 1 and a 2. My thoughts are staff turnover and management changes. We even have turned things over for a civil suit regarding her lack of care the last month or so. Cleanliness: I never saw this as as issue until the end. Mom had fallen out of bed, must have hit her head and bled on the rug. Until the day she passed they never scrubbed the rug to remove the stain. Friendliness: like all staff some are friendlier than others. There were some that always friendly and helpful, spending extra time with Mom and holding her hand. Others, younger ones mostly, did their job but not much more. For the ones that were so good to Mom I want to say 5. But overall I have to say 3. Quality of Care: As I said this varied drastically from the beginning to end. Very good at the beginning, a 4 or even a 5. As I said it deteriorated so much in the last couple months that we are suing. A 1 for the last month. Food: Acceptable quality. Trouble is that with her Macular degeneration she couldn't see the food and with her dementia she couldn't focus. If one of us stayed, cut things up and fed her she ate well. The staff didn't/couldn't. Food itself is a 3. Activities: Like the rest of the scores this starts out good then goes to hell. In the beginning they had a form of bingo where there was a staff member with each person to help. And they all wine something. Mom won socks and loved them. They had dancing which thrilled Mom. At the end all this was gone. They sat them all in a big room and turned on the TV. That was it. Went from a 5 to a 1. Value for the Money: It cost a $[removed]/month less than [facility removed] and others. In the beginning it was a great value. Not so much at the end. Turned them over to the Michigan Ombudsman for seniors who found they needed improvement. And have not heard yet about the civil suit. Have they turned around because of this? I do not know. If they have it would be a good value. Otherwise I'd pass.

To conduct a complete investigation, seniors and their families should:

  • Tour any listed location to confirm the accuracy of the community description
  • Confirm that the community offers services that are required for the senior's specific needs and budget
  • Check additional licensing and state audit information

If you become aware of any information that should be updated or noted, please contact A Place for Mom. A Place for Mom uses the term “assisted living” to indicate that the community provides some level of assistance with daily living activities. It does not indicate that the facility meets official state requirements for level of care.
