Excellent customer care, service and accommodations.
I needed a 'Respite Care' residence to recover from my complete knee replacement, for safety reasons due to living in a two story house and having recently lost my wife of 46 plus years and no one else living in the house or near by. I spent the month between Christmas and New Years in this amazing facility, and was so pleasantly surprised at the level of client care, attention, and accommodations that I received. The one bedroom apartment that I was provided was spacious, clean, warm and inviting, with a kitchen, dining room, and electric fireplace. When I wasn't able to go down stairs to the dining room for meals they sent them up to my room when I requested, and if I didn't come down or ask for a meal they called to make sure I was ok and checked to see if I was coming down or needed anything brought up. I received a visit from the in-house nursing staff a number of times, and was provided a call button for emergencies. The dining staff new me by name after my first visit.

Community for care
We toured this assisted living community for care. We liked the staff who were friendly and able to answer the questions we had. The community appearing to be clean and maintained, They offer healthy meals and activities for the residents who want to participate. We would look for a community that had more activities going on with the residents.

Very friendly staff. Location is nice (not in their stomping grounds...). Food was very good (almost too spicy for my mom. Great selection too! Daw tue top floor lounge. It does seem nice. My Dad saw the price after and said nope! It's an eye opener for sure. They are getting a home care (VIHA) nurse coming in tomorrow. Once they get their needs assessed, we will be in a better place to know where to proceed. If it is at home or going into a home, etc. If they can stay in their home I am asking them to consider living close to ke in a condo. It's a thought we gave them this weekend. Major changes but they are kind of realizing that something has to happen.

Douglas House Made Our Decision Easy
Initial contact with the staff at Douglas House was efficient, accommodating and warm. Follow up was timely and sensitive (even generous) to specific needs of my family members. When considering a move to assisted living for yourself or a loved one, I would definitely recommend a personal tour of this residence.

New Home
Mom was only at Douglas House for 5 days before she passed. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive. The building was well maintained and residents seemed to enjoy the services offered them. It was nice that her room was painted and new rugs/drapes were provided before Mom moved in. I would certainly recommend Douglas House to anyone requiring assistance.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the British Columbia regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about British Columbia regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Amica Douglas House 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
