Very poor experience
The rehab facility seems to be pretty well maintained, however the communication by myself (PoA for a long time friend) and the staff was non-existent. Calls were placed to his nurse and to the PT/OT department. A call was never answered (5 calls over a two week period) nor did I get a response to any voice mail message I left with both areas. During a visit, even though I identified myself as his PoA, I could get very little information about his rehab process. Simple questions such as "is he going to PT daily" were brushed off as not something the nurse knew. I was finally notified by his Assisted Living facility that he would be discharged within 48 hours I we needed to determine where was going. We will never use Holy Cross Rehab again.

Not a good experience.
Food quality is on the bottom of the scale. I've called for clarification and updates with no reply. I've have been promised follow up on questions and never happened. My mom was told by staff she was going home on a Friday and they made her stay till Tuesday. No reason for the change provided. Overall very poor communication.

Poor and unsafe care
At a glance the rehab building is bright, nice and welcoming. I toured the building and interviewed an 'intake' staff member. My dad was an inpatient in rehab for 3 weeks after a stroke which left him unable to speak. Often times I would come in after work to have dinner with my dad. I would find my dad in bed still in a hospital gown. On several occasions he would have a cold tray of dinner at his bedside, this must have been torture for him as he needed assistance eating. Thankfully he was not able to grab the food on his own as he could have choked and nobody would be around. Staff was always rushed and spent very little time with the patients. I made several attempts to speak a charge nurse or equivalent, my request went unanswered. The only time dad got cleaned up while he was there was a shower I personally gave him. He lost so much weight over the 3 weeks that his dentures did not fit by the time he left. Overall, poor care from every department. Would NOT recommend anybody send a loved one to this facility.

The real "One Flew Over The Coo coo's Nest"
Once "The cream handling the cream", Holy Cross has fallen significantly in building repair and nursing residential care. The building is 26 years old and very little money is put back into it. Bad plumbing, lighting and antiquated bed call light system is always in disrepair. Showers have little water pressure and are luke warm at best. Nursing staff is subject to unbelievable turn over, resulting in inexperienced CNA's working short-handed and quitting. Call light response time averages 20 minutes to sometimes 2 hours. That is way too long to wait to be toileted or to have a resident's brief changed. Unexplained bruises are charted, but when a family complains, the results a always unconfirmed or unsubstantiated. Aids are forced to take short cuts in transfers and resident hygiene, sometimes with harmful consequences. The food meets IN state parameters, but meals are usually cold after a hour's wait to be be served as there aren't enough staff to get the food to the table quickly. There is no specific diabetic menu. Activities are condescending, child-like and lack personal interaction. Candy bars are usually given as prizes, even to diabetics. Food and constant, hypnotizing T.V. seem to be the main activities, Residents are often allowed to sit at dining tables for hours alone with no staff interaction other than medication administration. Long story short; This facility is dying. The advent of home care has hurt the census of the facility. People are staying home longer in life. This has hurt this facilities profit bottom line. Challenged staffing levels, poor maintenance, and impersonal interaction with the residents really pull at your heart strings. Many family members and staff are at there wit's end.
