I think one stop shopping in the community and the activities were all great. The staff is solid. Having the nurse [name removed], there was probably the single biggest key to our success.

If you’re looking for a memory care facility for your loved one, figuring out how to pay for it might feel overwhelming. However, there are many ways to cover the costs of memory care, including private payment methods, VA benefits, and programs like Medicaid and Medicare. In this section, you’ll learn more about each payment method and how it applies to memory care facilities.
You can pay for your loved one’s memory care using private payment methods. Options include income sources like savings, Social Security benefits, pensions, and investment returns. Here is a list of other funding sources you might find useful:
Number of veterans who live in Georgetown
About 39% of Georgetown veterans are 75+
If your loved one served in the military (or has a spouse who did), they may qualify for some benefits from the Veterans Administration. There are many different benefits that can apply based on individual situations, but a couple of the most common are the VA Pension and the Aid and Attendance benefits. Both are paid to qualified veterans on a monthly basis and can help with the cost of memory care. The Aid and Attendance, specifically, is for veterans who need help with activities of daily living.
To find out if your loved one qualifies for any VA benefits, you don’t have to go it alone. The VA has vetted and trained experts called veterans service officers, who provide free assistance with the process. You can connect with one through veterans service organizations — such as the American Legion — or at the Williamson County Veterans Services Office. It’s worth checking with one of these officers even if you’re unsure if your loved one is eligible.

Texas’ Medicaid program is health care coverage for seniors with low incomes. It won’t pay for the cost of living in a memory care facility, but it can still help your loved one save money. If your loved one needs health care delivered within their memory care facility, a home and community based services waiver could be used to cover that cost, but only if a doctor considers it medically necessary.
For low-income seniors who already qualify for Medicare, Texas offers Medicaid for the Elderly and People with Disabilities (MEPD). For those who live in a household where at least one family member is on Medicaid, there is a Health Insurance Premium Payment Program (HIPP) you can qualify for to cover the premium cost of the other person’s employer-sponsored health insurance.
To apply for Medicaid in Texas, you must use the Your Texas Benefits portal. If you need assistance or have questions, there are resources available to help: the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area houses both programs.
For all the details on Texas’ Medicaid program, take a look at the Texas Medicaid Reference Guide, commonly referred to as the “Pink Book.”

If your loved one is 65, disabled, or has end-stage renal disease, Medicare is the federal health insurance program designed for them. Medicare will not pay for the cost of living in a memory care facility; however, Medicare will cover medically necessary health care delivered in the facility for short-term medical needs.
For additional savings, your loved one might qualify for a Medicare Savings Program or Extra Help. These programs can help offset the costs of Medicare premiums, copayments, and prescription drugs.
You can apply for Medicare and its programs online or by printing out enrollment forms and taking them to your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.
Texas Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides a Medicare Helpline that gives free counseling to answer your questions about Medicare and assist with enrollment. The Williamson County long-term care ombudsman — at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area — is another person who can answer questions about Medicare.

Memory care facilities in Georgetown are licensed and inspected by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. Memory care facilities must have a Type B assisted living facility license. This specific license is for facilities that house people who may need help during overnight hours and cannot follow directions, and need assistance in case of an emergency evacuation.
Memory care facilities must adhere to the regulations put forth in this Texas Administrative Code and this Health and Safety Code. These same codes apply to assisted living facilities. The only difference is there are additional standards for facilities that provide memory care, called Certified Alzheimer’s Assisted Living Facilities. These additional standards apply to staffing, staff training, activities, and the safety and security of the facility itself.
In a facility with 17 or more residents, two staff members must be available immediately to help any resident who needs assistance. Otherwise, a specific ratio is not specified. However, facilities are expected to have sufficient staff to meet the needs of all residents. Staff members are also required to complete training specific to caring for residents with memory impairments.
Activities must be provided in a memory care facility that encourage residents to socialize and participate in physical activities. These planned activities must be individualized based on what’s appropriate for each resident and their needs and abilities.
There are additional provisions to ensure the facility itself is safe and secure for residents with memory issues. Most of them have to do with exits, alarms, secured outdoor spaces, and other facility-specific needs to ensure the safety of residents who might be prone to wandering.
To make sure facilities are living up to all these requirements, they are inspected at least once every two years by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. You can go online to find out how facilities fared during inspections or see complaints on this long-term care provider search portal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have no mandates for memory care facilities, but it does provide guidelines for preventing COVID-19. Likewise, the city of Georgetown doesn’t have specific requirements, either, but does post coronavirus information on the city’s website.
The CDC highly encourages people to have COVID-19 vaccinations and subsequent boosters.
Face masks are not mandatory in Georgetown anymore, but if a memory care facility wants to require them, they’re allowed to do so.
The CDC has provided suggestions on ways to improve airflow and ventilation in buildings to keep virus particles from spreading.
The CDC recommends people isolate themselves for five days if they’ve tested positive or have symptoms.

Volunteers will pick up your loved one at the door, walk them to the vehicle, and drive them to where they want to go. With the door-through-door service, they’ll even accompany seniors on their errands or medical appointments and even assist with filling out paperwork if needed. Because volunteers use their own vehicles, wheelchairs can’t be accommodated unless the rider is able to transfer to the vehicle on their own.
Memory loss doesn’t mean that all is lost. Your loved one can still enjoy peaceful moments and fun outings with you, and you’ll enjoy spending time with them. Georgetown features a lot of great options for reminiscing and spending time with your loved one.

The theater has been restored to its full glory and hosts plays, concerts, and more. It’s a welcoming place that makes sure everyone feels included and has a great time.
If you think your loved one might get restless trying to sit through a performance, try the free Free adaptive performances that offer shorter, more interactive versions for people with special needs. If sight and sound are an issue, your loved one can use the theater’s inductive hearing loop that delivers dialogue directly into hearing aids that have T-Coils. There is also an audio description, which is a verbal commentary explaining what’s happening on stage between moments of dialogue. It helps people stay looped into what’s going on so they can more independently enjoy the show. There’s also an American Sign Language night at least once for every staged performance.
